As I am building my rig up I am toying with the idea of locking the rear end up with a electric locker out of a tacoma. I have read alittle bit about doing it and whats involved, but curious if anybody here has ever done it?

Thanks

you would be better off going with a detroit in the rear and thje selectable in the front

never done it, but a trd e-locker would be great in the rear (and front) for a DD

I know you've read about it, so ya know that basically all that needs to be done is grind the housing a bit for it all to fit.

The truck is a DD so I want to keep it unlocked except when needed. I'll just look around for a spare axel to do it on over the winter i guess.

If it works well I'll do the front next year.

I know I've seen some third gen trucks that I've worked on with the factory diff locker switch atleast installed in the dash. I've never climbed under to see if it was wired into the diff but it was wired right into the dash wiring harness leading me to think they came with it and it wasnt just added on.
But I'm no toy guy so I cant be sure

elockers first came in (aside from JDM's & LC's) tacoma's (theoretically the 4th gen pickup 95.5-04) and 3rd gen runners (96-00). its a relatively straightforward retrofit for any 8" housing. lots of info on the web..here's (http://67.122.16.97/carterman/4runner/mods/locker/) one of em, and another one (http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/electric_locker/)

i've never done it myself..mine already came with it [stoned]. i've got one for sale with 4.30's in it and wiring harness...and an extra set of 8" V6 4.30's as well if youre interested...

The Elockers require a ECU I think, At least in JDM 80 series land cruisers.

Nope, just wire up the switch properly. Might be a wire that needs to be bypassed as factory in taco's they only ever came on if you were in 4 low.

only if you want it to run within the limits set by the ECU. for the tacoma's and 4runners, that means only in 4L, and theres a 5mph limit that you can actuate it on the fly. i've disabled the 4L so its available in 2H and 4H.

its really just needs an on/off switch with some relays...
