Hi, I'm looking to buy a 1989 isuzu Trooper LS, But I don't know much about them. Are they a good 4x4. are there any issues with the trooper that I should look out for.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The trooper I'm looking at I can get for $600.00 needs some body work(surface rust mostly) needs rear brakes and a new windsheild. other than that everything else is in good operating condition.

Do the Troopers hold there value pretty good. Would be nice to not lose all my money in the build like in the past!

Troopers don't have any value to begin with.

So really, it's a no lose situation.

Does anyone know what the history is on the engines for the trooper. do they live past 300,000km usually? A bit of a dumb question but I just don't want to get stuck with a lemon! I believe the one I'm looking at is a 2.6 litre, not sure if they come with any other size engine....

They also use the chev 2.8 and it is crap.the 2.6 is decent and a few mods give you alright power. They seem to go forever but the other IFS stuff will rear its ugly head pretty soon after you play with it.I have a rebuilt motor and tranny and the suspension all kicked the bucket thats why the swap. When i bought mine i found the nicest one in bc and there was 5 for sale.they were askin $6995 and i put in another $10000.You will have a nice truck after you build it but you need to figure what you want to spend and where you want it to go.They are capable trucks stock if you get the L/S 4;56 diffs but for $600 they arent in that truck.

If you get on without a limited-slip.... I will swap you for a limited slip 4.56 third.

they all come with posse im pretty sure ? As for as engines go I looked for a parts trooper i was willing to spend 500 ,every one had a Fudged engine aka the heads blow up very easy due to poor design the heads crack if they over heat and what not. They re designed the 2.6 L head 5 times my friend had the 5th re mold in his trooper and it still blew up .My trooper has 263 kms on it ,I bought it for 500 changed the tranny and did body work and it was fine. its worth about 2800$ to me and prob about 500 still to some one else. But in the long run even tho i got jewed I dont regret getting a trooper[36]

Nope. Open diffs were avaliable. I've seen one in a Trooper and one in P/U.

Both of which I should have taken the time to pull.

well good thing I got one with limited slip, at least that will help me on the trails till I get some new gears in my rear end.

So broken down ,really a trooper is not a bad start its my first 4 bi I'm only 17 its just that If your going to buy one for 500/600 $ like me your going to have to be prepared to spend another 2000 to get it going really good , in less you get a cherry ? just take your time looking at every one ,look at air care km,s listen to the engine check the rad/oil make sure the tranny shifts, my mistake and had to put in a new one as well a clutch that was 860$ into the truck before it even moved. But good luck

If they came with a Chevy 2.8 v6 then you should be able to bolt in a 4.3 ltr.

i put up a complete list on here of the motor options.

230 is there cams available for the 2.6 isuzu engine ?its either that or i get mine machined, I know a place that apparently cuts cams and changes intake and exhaust for power, but you have to have your engine tuned perfect all the time for air care, think its like a 100 bucks to get it done , then id do the timing belt while I'm at it.

I don't know much about trooper motors...

But I do know something about inter-changeability of GM motors. A 4.3 uses the chevy small block V8 pattern - because it was one until they cut two cylinders off. A chevy 2.8 is a 60* motor - and uses the chevy 60* pattern. Which is shared with the 3.4 and late buick 3.8 to name a few.

I do not know what the 2.6 uses for a pattern. But I'll hazard it is a 60* chevy.

Either way, as a bolt in a 4.3 is not.

if you don't know about them ya might wanna learn about them before ya buy one, not a lot of after market for them compared to a domestic truck unless you wanna sell it after ya got some one else to fuck it up for ya then ya can sell it for 3x what ya paid for it

this 2.8 swap talk is nice but what about the 2.6 ? there is barley any troopers with the shitty 2.8 every one I know has the gutless 2.6,which I'm tired of i'm still in school and i dont have alot of money but id still pay the 20 extra dollars in gas as long as im putting it into and engine that can move my truck properly, Basically Isuzu under powered all the troopers, and there is no after market stuff for any of there engines

FZJ80

In my opinion spending money on the 2.6 to try to get more power would be the wrong path to follow. The basic engine is flawed and the power adders that you can afford won't change that or give you the power you are after. Money is always an issue but some times it is best to just hold off doing anything untill you can do it right.

i totally agree i havent changed anything yet so far ,I cleaned mine and just tuned it up to run pretty much as well as when it was new ,leeding to max hp , but today I put on a cone filter from apc, and it got some juice from that. Other then that high flow cat and headers and getting the cam ground are prob the biggest hp gainers, which both are a money burner ,Money I don't have either lol. my other route is to gear it down in the front and rear ends but I do not want to buy used which leads me to spend round 3-5 hundred$ but of course as you saydo it right so when I get a full time job which i will, school is holding me back from this, and my truck will no longer be a dd. I make some good coin in construction so il make the trooper a ww (weekend worrier ) sas it ,leaf over , then swap a decent engine in it and hopefully gas is cheaper if world war three doesn't start:mad0217:
