oh dude, simple. jack up the ass end. put it in neutral. Mark your drive shaft and diff. rotate your tire, 1 complete revolution. Count how many times your drive shaft rotates.

If you are locked it will be either 1 tire rev to XXX of drive shaft. that will be your ration i.e. 4.10:1.

If you are open, rotate your tire 2 times. and count the rotation of your drive shaft. if your drive shaft rotates 4.1 times, then your ratio is 4.1:1
This will also be your ratio. (lockers work differently.

next question?

Someone at one time posted a site that you could put the nubers in from your tag and it would tell you evrything in it.

Most Ford or Dana axles have a tag held on by one of the cover bolts. (with the ratio stamped on it).

GM has option codes in the glovebox. Ford has axle codes on the door jamb stick. And finally, yes - the dealer can look up the build sheet from the VIN number so long as it isn't too old.

I would do the spin tire, count rotation method. Who knows if the gears have been changed.
