I'm welding my rear diff pretty soon and I will be stick welding it with a Miller thunderbolt ac/dc machine. What's the best type of rod to use ? Looking for specific numbers.

The diff is a sterling 10.25 rear end just to let you know

thanks

use nickel rods ,youll end up snapin a axle before you wreak your diff its self[cheers]

Yeah I used a 707SP rod, not to sure exactly what it means but it worked awsome. I also pre heated mine gears until they started smoking.

ok I searched on whiteknight under welding section and some people say pre heat and mig the shit out of it and some say use a 7018 or a 6010. I think I might try the 6010 and preheat. Either way I'm welding the gears and everything together, I'm not a big fan of broken welds.

Use NiRod, Preheat as hot as you can get it in a bbq and weld it.

7018 is what i use I also pre heat and cool slow or pre heat and spray transfer with mig works great too and less clean up.

spray transfer is when you pre heat and use lots of heat 24volt + and decent wire feed and the wire actually will spray on in stead of drip its my favorite way of welding .

spray transfer requires a more argon rich gas like over 80% i believe if your welding it at school troy i dont think waz has that kinda gas i would arc weld it with a 6010 rod for depest penetration

6010 for penatration than 7018 or 8018(hard to find) for shearing strength.

I agree, if theres any rust or dirt these and the 6011 rods work best, they are an absolute pain in the ass to use if you havent used them before tho.

ya... well i know theres a way of tightening them as well but i doubt it would work that well with the big tires

im going to pull mine apart this week and weld it. If you have a posi i would say just buy a spool. Spool is like your stock carrier but half the weight and has no spider/side gears in it. It's the same thing as a welded diff but a bit stronger and more expensive
