try doing a valve set/adjustment, if its cold the lifters/rockers are loose, and as it warms up they expand, and tighten up. Always happens on my 300-6

take off the valve cover u mean? and adjust them?

04-15-2007, 12:35 PM
if you used an additive like lucas that thickens the oil thats what probably made it worse i have heard that complaint many times

Get used to it. The 4.0L are notorious for lifter noise. My 2 door used to sound like a diesel. I tried everything under the sun to no avail.

i talked to my dad (owns a 4.0L in his truck) and he has to adjust the valves very often, especially in the older ones. I have no experience with them, I know hondas very well (unfortunately), and their SOHC (D16Z6 and D16Y8) design needs to be adjusted very often.

hey off topic....im lazy how much you guys charge at the shop??oil/greese???kinda scared of the one at reids corner...

04-15-2007, 11:26 PM

ford put out a tsb on ticking motors it says to use 5w30 instead of 10 w 30 i tried and it worked on mine the only other way to fix it is to change the lifters and thats a pain in the ass because the heads have to come off

just my two cents

well ill do the lifters.... its fuckin annoying/embarassing

04-18-2007, 11:28 PM
dont do the lifters, the 4l lifters are actually 390 lifter i belive and there roller, they newver wear out, plus there like 6-700$ the 4l uses a rocker shaft that wear out all you guys with your ticking 4litres need rocker shafts and push rods thats it . like 90% of the time, my 91 sploder was really bad, did the shafts and rods and dead quiet. rocker shaft from ford is about 150 bucks ea plus rods and valve cover gasktet, you can do it fer under 500 bucks easy and do the intake gaskets while your in there theyll need it anyways. pm me for more info (work at dealership)

It would prob be easer to find a used 4L then to rebuild one [36] [36] [36]

welll i got a buddy that has a 4L new shit on it, lifters and wut not for $300....

04-20-2007, 08:32 AM
its not rebuilding, it takes maybe 1/2 hour per side its easy and makes all the noise go away! just gotta get off the valve covers and thats it.

What blocker_69 said. My dad had a 91 that ticked like crazy. Tryed everthing. We put new lifters and rockers on and it was gone. Hope that helps . Cheers. Not that hard of a job.[36]

dont replace lifters there not the wear item, there full roller, the rocker shaft is. thats it just pushrods and rocker shafts.

im just replacing the engine...

04-22-2007, 09:28 PM
Its a 4.0L, they tick with age, live with it....

04-24-2007, 06:22 PM
they dont have adjustments on them

Im curious tho how do you adjust for wear? They are a SOHC engine no? I would imagine they are a bucket/shim or rocker-type. If they are an OHV engine obviously they are adjusted through the rocker.

04-24-2007, 06:23 PM
Or by longer pushrods (as ive had to do with my 300-6)

04-24-2007, 06:32 PM
not adjustable! thats why when they start ticking the you learn to live with it.
usually its the bar that the rockers all ride on that gets worn out
sohc did not come untill 96 i think. the one daryl has is an ohv

04-24-2007, 06:53 PM
ahh i see now why my pops can adjust his, hes got a 2000. The Mazda/Ford 3.0L V6 in the MPV van has the same bloody problem, i had to change the whole rocker/rail assembly in my moms MPV twice now and its not even at 170K

04-24-2007, 06:54 PM
but the 3.0L is a SOHC engine tho, good for a boat anchor

04-24-2007, 11:59 PM
97 or 98 for the cammer, had bad tensioners. didnt have ticks but horrible chain rattle on start up. chances are that used motor your gettin will tick too.
the ohv is non adjustable as in hydraulic roller lifters.
