just bought a rear end, its supposed to be out of a 2wd 3/4 ton dodge. older style. it has the double casting on the center section, which from all ive read says its a heavy duty diff. the axle tubes do NOT neck down at the ends, ive seen some 70's that they do, but not sure if any of them dont. the brakes dont seem too huge(drums) compared to some of the 14 bolt stuff ive seen either?
on the end of the axle that bolts onto the hub, there are 2 markings that were visible J65 - MW

what other things should i look for to figure out what axle this is, short of taking a grinder to the whole thing and finding the factory stampings? there is no tag on the diff cover.

Usually on the lower webs coming off the centersection right by the collars where the axles join in. Should be a reaised 60 there. I've seen some d70's with 60 cast in the center as well, so that might not actually help you out. Take out a shaft and measure it's diameter.
