View Full Version : 3 Months in the Desert

The hardest part of spending three months in the desert is deciding what photos to include in this storyÖ

We left Dec. 22 and having white snowy conditions most of the way, we encountered more mishaps until we hit the heat than on any other trip before. Dry Falls looks as good in the winter as it does in the summer.

We blew a motor home tire and chains in Oregon. We just pulled into Baker City, OR at 4pm on Dec 23rd. Not wanting to continue when we use our only spare and no additional chains, and knowing the tire shops would be closed for at least three days, we find the Les Schwab still open and willing to fit us in. Great service! We are back on the road.

Our first warm stop is usually Pahranagat Lakes in Nevada. We were amazed to find snow here in this usually warm area. Not to be discouraged, we camp for a few days and find some adventure on the backroads. Finding canyon roads, earth quake seismographs, golden eagles, petroglyphs this was a fun day.

Stopping in Vegas for only supplies, we head out to Death Valley. The weather is still a little under the norm for temps (60-65F), but much better than what we see back home.

Planning a trip around Death Valley, we head out to the Badlands. This is 282 feet below sea level and the numerous water tanks to refill radiators along the highway remind us that in the summer it must be blazing hot here.
47371

47372

47373

47374

47375

We follow an old trail that takes us through a canyon and the eye of the needle. Finding this old mine in great shape, I just had to construct an Inukshuk to mark our path through this area.

Far away from anyone anywhere, our closest neighbor is about 75 feet away. He runs an internet satellite, and here on New Years Day, we connect to send our friends and family happy wishes. How cool is that?
47381

A run to China Ranch-an oasis in the desert with great date shakes, we stop by some hot springs, caves and hoodoos.
47382

47383

Off on a new run, we map out the area and head off. Venturing upon Warm Springs- this is an amazing area just past the Talc mining area and full of history. The buildings are becoming dilapidated, but thinking of them in their heyday boggles the mind. A natural hot spring actually filled this pool, complete with its diving board. Reading the history of the place, they had a full fruit orchard as well until a serious wash killed it all. Now part of Death Valley, it will never regain its former glory. You are welcome to camp here at any time.
47384

47385

47386

47387

Continuing along our planned trail, we pass by striped butte and find several cabins in the middle of no where. You are also welcome to stay in any of them anytime. We met a couple who stay here every year.
47388

47389

47390

Carl Menger was an old prospector in the area, and his grave is marked along the pass we had to travel through-also named after him.
47391

47392

Our destination for the day is Barker Ranch. Here, again miles from no where is a ranch that is fed by a spring, must have had generators to be able to use the indoor plumbing. The most eerie part of this section is that the Barker Ranch is where they found and arrested Charles Manson back in 1969. We didnít spend a lot of time here, as it was creepy indeed. Scary that he is up for parole this year.
47393

47394

Deciding on heading over to Overton, we pull out a couple of days later. The red rock trails were fabulous once again. What a great night for fire and champagne.
47395

47397

47398

47399

Finally heading into Sin City for a while, we do some tourist walking, and walking and more walking. Visiting the CES (Consumer Electronic Show) was amazing. Taz goes pretty much every year, but this was my first trip in, and I must say it is awesome!
47401

47402

47403

Around the Laughlin/Chloride/Kingman area is lots of desert just waiting to be explored. The Desert Bar (Nellie E Saloon) can be reached by a rough road, or for those more adventurous like Taz, a 5 Ĺ mile trail that takes over 2 hours. Here, there is a live band in an old mining camp turned bar. There is a church made of steel and the bar is powered by solar.
47404

47405

47406

47407

47408

47409

Truckhaven is our new destination for the year. Reading about the trails, we head over for a week. Meeting people has to be a highlight where ever we go, and Truckhaven is no exeption. Joining up with some locals, we get a taste of the area. The terrain is spectacular.

47414

47415

47416

47417

47418

47419

47420

One highlight of the trail is the phone booth. Here, perched on top of a Mesa, is a complete phone booth cemented in, complete with phone book, phone and a visitor log to sign in. The trail up is quite vertical with as sudden drop at the top so making sure to navigate the sharp right is imperative. We saw a quad roll down this just before our climb.
47421

47422

47423

47424

47425

More fun through the wash and trails
47426

47427

47428

47429

47430

Slab City is our next destination. You really have to witness this just once in your life. We have been here many times over the years, and each year is just as much fun. It used to be an old Marine Base and is now just the cement slabs from old buildings are left. Snowbirds flock here for the winter. This year we meet some new friends from Pennsylvania. Roger and Rabbit are just as crazy as we are and get along great. Heading off to find the natural oasis of the area, we are not disappointed. This pool was crystal clear and very deep. I couldnít touch bottom in the middle, and the water was fed by an underground supply.
47431

47432

47433

47434

The cabin here was built by a China man for his bride. Sam sure must have been short to get through that doorway.
47435

When you are traveling through the desert, and far from anyone, to come across a Taz stuck in a bush was a little freaky.
47436

Another day, another adventure. Off to the Bat Caves.Still a lot of daylight to try to get back to the Oasis. We find another one, this full of abandoned homes. Here is Roger and Rabbit-they fit nice in the back of the Zuke-donít you think???
47437

47438

47439

47440

The mud pots were cool to visit too. Mighty stinky.
47441

47442

Itís time to say goodbye to the Slabs, and off to Yuma. The Midnight at the Oasis Car Show is always a treat to visit.
47443

47444

47445

Nothing nicer that an afternoon nap in a hammock!!
47446

Camping near Yuma is warm, sunny and fun. We have a great view..
47447

47448

47449

47450

We hear that someone drove into the lake. Time for a rescue. Mighty hard on the Zuke and winch pulling this guy out of the lake.
47451

47452

47453

47454

Took a few hours, but we were successful-not without carnage. Taz blew an axel. Glad to have spare parts, a desert repair fix puts us back in action.
47455

47456

Off to a turquoise mine and more fun. I got a kick out of the monkey faced rock here.
47457

This is Laguna Dam
47458

Sadly, we begin the trek home. Stopping by Pahranagat again-this time to 94F temps. Then the final push home.
47459

47460

47461

Hope you all enjoy.

Nice trip! Cool rocks you driving under. Loks dry in the desert. What kind of animals did you see? Did you see any walking desert man alone? Too bad about the damage but good you helped pull truck out of the water. See you soon.
