ok my ford is not a truck its a car, but i was wondering if there is alot of ford cars out there that require premium gas. cause i had a gas attendent asking me if i should be putting premium in. i would just like some other opinions.

what kind of car???
if its not a high compession engine and its timed right you can run regular
you dont get more power or better gas mileage with premium either

but the thing is it seems to run better the regular. i have more problems with it when using regular. so i don't know but i thought i would ask and get more then just the hubby and father in laws input. :)

Your car does not need to run on premium sounds like you may need a tune up[cheers]

give you car a tune up if that dosen't help try mid grade but the engine should run fine on regular

That engine is built to run on regular unleaded. It probably seems to run better on premium the way it runs better after you wash it. [cheers]

an 86 topaz that needs to run on premo... now I've heard it all

high carbon buildup in the combustion chamber will raise the effective compresion ratio making it run better and detonate less on premium sounds like its time for a "mexican tuneup"

What? pour water down the carb?

Seriously though, the only difference between regular gas and premium is the octane level (and probably some detergents and additives that don't effect performance). Octane is used to make the fuel more stable at higher temperatures - IE when you are hitting 6000 RPM in a high compression motor and everything is screaming hot. The fuel going in stays stable until the spark hits it. With lower octane fuel in a high performance engine you pound on it and the fuel starts to detonate before it is in the compression stage (sparkplug firing) - you hear pinging. The only time that your motor will hear that, being a POS ford from the 80s, is when it is OVERHEATING.

...Unless you have put a turbo on it and are running 20PSI of boost.

Check your temp sensor, coolant levels, thermostat or water pump to ensure it isn't overheating, and pour some injector cleaner in your gas - you could be (like others have suggested) carboned up to hell and creating a higher compression motor with filth... Pour in some injector cleaner and proceed to beat that thing like it is stolen for a week or two, you will burn more gas sure, but it will burn off the crap in your engine.

On a side note, my car hits 6500 RPM on my way to work every day and it runs fine on 87. If I wanted to hit the 8000rpm rev limiter I would probably want to run 90+ and advance my timing..and hope my injectors can keep up... At that point I would probably have to worry about valve float though. (when your valves don't have enough time to come back down before they are supposed to be open again kind of thing)

screw that, its a ferrari. run 94 octane...

I run regular but every couple months I'll fill it with premium just to clean everything out what they don't tell ya is that most of those fuel injector cleaners are little more then an octane booster filling it with premium will do the same job.
Or you can go to napa (don't tell my boss) and get a product called seafoam to clean everything out it works really well.

well i know i took it for a tune up like 4 or 5 months ago and it was still making that sound. and i know its not a turbo. but what i might do is try the injecter cleaner and see if that might make a difference. i don't like the idea of having to spend $$$$ on premium.

if the throdle body is going would that have anything to do with the noises and lack of power going to it??

Go to a mechanic, ask the mechanic, premium will make your car run worse.

ok let me start with the the fact that she didn't tell you that when i drive the car it dose not have any problem other that it ping when we climb up ceder connecter if she runs mid grade gas it dose not ping when we got the car if i shifted in to 2nd from drive it did not ping

So what you are saying is that it wont downshift under load from drive and is pinging as the motor bogs out?

Answer: drive it like a standard drive it like it's stolen

Missy's Jimmy

basically thats how i'm kinda driving it now... but i know its not suppose to make that noise and it seems to only do it mostly when i drive the damn thing.
