ford 400 is ther anywat to get more power out of it im going to be forced to use it this year at may long i wont be able to have the 460 in by then  so im thinking when i got it the exaust was cut off at the t-case so i was thinking adding some thrush pipes (cherry bombs) maybe get some more back pressure plugs wires cap roter carb clean so i dont know so i went and got gears for the diffs ... so i dont know

Get an aftermarket cam. Ford notched it back about 6 degrees to comply with emissions, and IIRC you can't advance it enough to compensate.

And pistons. The factory pistons are dished about 23cc I believe, so with new pistons you could get about 10:1 compression.

its an older moter that im not about to start ripping apart when im going to a 460 soon as possible but thanx but wut would cause a moter to stall out when i rev it it will idle fine and drive fine but if im just sitting in the same spot and rev it it seems to want to stall

The best thing you can do for the 351M and 400 is took buy an aftermarket 4 barrel carb, intake and headers. Don't second guess it, just do it. Stock from the factory they only made about 159 horsepower and around 260 foot pounds of torque. The camshaft and timing was retarded by 4 degrees in 1978 and up 351M and 400 engines. So buying an aftermarket camshaft is also a great way to improve horsepower. Comp Cams makes a sweet valvetrain kit that comes with lifters, new springs, camshaft all the stuff you need to replace your valvetrain with. After doing all these mods you'll have a good torquey workhorse motor (assuming your bottom end and compression is decent) and its alot less on gas than a 460. People shun these motors because of the factory emmisions garbage but with a new intake, carb, headers, cam they are good.

Here's some good links about the motors

Ill try and find the link to the comp cams kit the site isnt working right now

depends where you want it.....but 8* retard would be very counter productive, moving the engines happy place to around maybe 8000-10,000rpm-ish.
400s are great, people like you who knock em and say theyre crappy old motors are the ones who let them go for free so people with them barely pay anything for parts. Not to mention the 351m/400 was the last pushrod engine ford ever designed, so its newer than the 460, 5.0L and 5.8L. It was just an engine built to run low compression, low emissions, low repair bills and get lots of miles. So ford build a stout engine and de-tuned every part of it. The pistons are below deck 0.07" (thats alot), the cam is degreed 4* retarded from the factory (timing chain), the cam its self is weak and the intake and carb leave the engine hungry for more.
So theres a trade off, the timing chain is about $100, guy here has an intake for $150...buy a carb and youre $300-$400 into it and it runs really well. Or swap to a 460, spend more, get more down time and suck more gas but get more stock HP/TQ

lol i just never knew that they where any good im only going on wut ppl tell me but wow thats alot of info thanx we will see i would love to just throw 400 at my moter but im at the point when i am in the middle of a move and alot of projects are underway so cash is real tight and my end goal will be to build something bulit proof because this will be a bogger and need all the power i can make

sorry it ment to say that ford made there timing chain sets with 8 degrees of retard in them and the cams have another 4 degrees of retard ground in to them

while youve got the engine apart you might as well get a new cam and lifter kit.

why add money into it to get more power when your putting a 460 in i wouldnt bother spending the money

I meant if you end up getting a new timing chain and intake/carb, a cam and lifter kit would be best to do then as the only extra work needed to put'm in would be pulling the rockers and pushrods.

the reason he is doing it is because he just needs a moter to work for him he is out time so will not be able to have the 460 in by may long

I know but then he said this
lol i just never knew that they where any good im only going on wut ppl tell me but wow thats alot of info thanx we will see i would love to just throw 400 at my moter
and I took it as him saying "if I can get the 400 to make enough power without spending a ton of cash it might just do".....so I said while the intake and timing cover are off a new cam install would be easiest done then.

........and then he said, then she said........

but who knows what he wants to do. Though I do know that with the KB pistons, a comp cams deh-255, 265 or 275 and a 4bbl intake with the "straight up" timing chain (0*) guys are making some real nice power around the 400ft/lbs mark down low.

yeah, just go to ford-trucks.com and spend some time in the "335 series" engine forum if you want to learn more and get some better advice from some seasoned 351m/400 builders. Its devoted to only the 351m and c as well as the 400.
