hey im looking at buying an 81 chevy 3/4 tonne with a 383 stroker and an 8" lift the only thing is that it needs the starter to be re wired and a battery to be installed i was just wondering is there a way to check that this is the only thing that is wrong with it and is there a way to get an engine with an automatic transmission to start without the starter

the guy asking 1500 it has a th350 transmision the engine and transmission have been recently rebuilt im jsut thinking htis may be a pretty good deal if the starter jsut has to be rewired

wiring for a starter is stupid easy and a new battery is as easy as swapping out of your truck. The only shitty part is going underneath with a heavy starter and wrestling it into place.

First, there is a thick cable(1 or 2 gauge) from the positive on the battery to the starter, this is on top @ 12 oclock.

Second, where 3 oclock is there is a ignition switch post

thirdy, where 9 oclock would be is the little peice that connects the motor to the selenoid.

Also, the starter might need to be shimmed, some dont but some do. Use the smallest amount of shimming required.

1500 is a steal for a freshly rebuild 383, let alone a full truck with a rebuild t350 behind it. I'd be weary.

ya i was thinking it would be easy so theres only like 3 wires including the one from the battery?

apparently the interior isnt so nice and he was asking twice that a month ago he apparently needs it gone asap

theres gotta be a reason why nobody is paying 1500 for what sounds like a kickass drivetrain alone. And yes, only 3 wires including battery.

i agree, hard to tell if its a 383, once it's running check oil pressure(the port is 3-4 inches to the drivers side of the distributor) and check compression too.

Things to look for:

-cracks around the steering box
-make sure the frame is soilid
-it should have a 14 bolt full floater rear, there is a inspection hole to check brake pad life
-Check the sills underneath where moisture can get trapped and rust out
-check the tranny fliud for discoloration or a burnt smell. Should be reddish pink

If it is it has different problems. Starter worked fine when I saw it however long ago - it was the front diff that was blown up.

a bad starter is an easy way out of saying the motor is pooched.
if you really want it tell them to slap in a starter (a 6 year old can even do it)
and you only really need the battery cable connected to it if it has the solenoid attached to the starter and a jumper wire to fire it up.

went to look at it..pissing rain....the interior has got lots of fuzzy white mold. The body is actually pretty good, almost no rust. They look like 12 bolt front and rear axles. got a spring lift and a body lift. Motor has got a new holley carb and intake on it. We put a battery in it but nothing happened at all, no click, nothing. It was to god damn rainy to get under it and check the wires out on the starter. the Owners buddy said the bendix wasn't working before so It must need a new starter and to hook up the wires properly. If the thing started up it would be a decent truck...wantedtruck (Mark) is gonna work a deal out with the guy to get it started cause like you guys said, you don't wanna buy it unless you hear it run.

we're all learning... except the old timers.

Did you check the power steering box?

troy, i think those selenoids are only on fords, on chevys its ontop of the starter like this:
