Went camping last weekend to a small island near Nanaimo - kayaked over with some friends and spent the night. Had the whole island to ourselves!

Northeast Lookout just past Kanaka Bay:

My Kayak, I totally recommend these, I've had it for 3 years now - fits in your trunk, paddles nice and straight, fits 1 person+gear or two people and small amount of gear (9 feet long)

In the morning on the paddle home we witnessed an eagle attacking a flock of seagulls midair - spinning around with them and finally getting one in its talons and spiraling towards the water. 30 feet before they hit the water, the eagle let go of the gull and it crashed into the water - to our surprise, the eagle swooped down at it again, took it in its claws and flew it to shore where it proceeded to kill and eat it.

I paddled real close, within 8 feet of it - I've never been so close to a bald eagle. Of course, Murphy's law - my camera's memory card was full, and I only got a couple low-res pictures:

It's especially good this time of year when there is no ferry service to the island ---- We can have the island to ourselves, camp outside of the 'camping zones' and even have a beach fire (not usually allowed)

oh, you mean these guys? (also taken at Newcastle)

There are a LOT of raccoons there, and the rare white raccoon as well, apparently NOT an albino, but a white raccoon! (I've yet to see them)
