http://www.toyotaoffroad.com/Articles/Toyota/Trekker/Images/rdunntrekker2.jpg http://www.toyotaoffroad.com/Articles/Toyota/Trekker/Images/rdunntrekker1.jpg

The Trekker was a vehicle built to test the waters (precursor) for the 4runner ... Toyota and winnabego got together (via a dealer in the midwest US) to build a "SUV" to "test the market" There was about 1500 built and supplied to the world .. they were built in the US , so most went to the North American market with only a few being shipped overseas . They were a custom built fiberglass box , and canopy ..mated to the original steel cab toyota truck .

We are going to reengineer/design ... and make a conversion kit for those of you whom would like .

how much you think the trekker kit will end up being?

dont know yet ... probabaly around the 3G area for NEW .. Thats Box , Canopy , and rear Gate . (not sure about windows yet)

after I get these units here .. I will have 1 USED back 1/2 , basically what you would be buying from me , as above, but this one would be an original used piece ... if your interested , email me .. cj@toyotafiberglass.com

$50.00 would do for now ... I have quite a bit of interest now , since I have said I would be building them .. the deposit will guarentee a position in the line for you ..

just to let you know .. I have started on them , BUT .. they will be a while yet . I'm also going to build a rear box flare (bolt on) to match the new fronts . :)

Big_Ern
06-08-2007, 04:26 PM
aight, well keep me in mind when you do decide to sell it. once its done. For a DD, I'd probably swap a 7mge(t?) anyway so I don't really care about motor since I can always change that.

slacker
06-08-2007, 04:59 PM
sell it ... naw .. I wont be selling it . Not if I build it my away :) not untill i'm 100 anyway :) .. you could contract one though !

We have NEW frames coming online here real soon (soon as my "hot rod" frame is done) , and possably are going to be building "complete" NEW Precision trekkers .

Big_Ern
06-08-2007, 05:05 PM
Damnit, I was hoping you'd be selling it. If ya change your mind, let me know.[cheers]

I have a feeling a complete NEW trekker might be too much for me though...[?]

so finally got a chance to tear into the back 1/2 .. and WOW . I must say there is NO lack of fasteners ..

no word of a lie , I pulled at least 100 fasteners out of there ..
I absolutly can not see removing the factory topper on these Trekkers , and replaceing them ... my new ones will be engineered to do so , but holy cow .. well maybe you'll be able to see the pain I went threw in the pics .. :hillbill:

slacker
07-24-2007, 07:01 AM
nope not this one .. Have another for that . I want to make the roof more easily removable .

This blue one is sold now (back 1/2) .. so i'm going to have to start over .
someone has seen it from another post on another board , and contracted a LONGBOX Trekker back 1/2 . no molds yet , so i'm going to be doing some custom work .

slacker
09-07-2007, 06:18 PM
ok ...

so I dont normally post pics "during" the build ... in a raw state such as this .. but hey .. what the hay

here is the bottom of the tub ... extended .
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/HPIM0274.jpg

EVERY piece of metal in the bed was rotten .. there was only a couple of pieces left .. This was the WORST failed part of the whole unit ... 22G Original .. I replaced with 14G
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/HPIM0273.jpg

and top side
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/HPIM0272.jpg

The bed sides have now also been extended ... inside is now complete ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/HPIM0268.jpg
still have to "work" the out side

Just cut the topper/canopy .. and ready to find some new side glass , and bond the to pieces together .. then its time to do the final outside prep. ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/HPIM0277.jpg

slacker
09-07-2007, 06:19 PM
so got to work on the topper/canopy ..
cut and now "loosly" spliced .. I started looking at the bolting strips .. Man , they are just a balsa wood material .. I dont know what the hell , but totally trashed ..
so I stripped them out as well
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0310.jpg

fell out in pieces , no wonder the roof bounces like a drum

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0312.jpg

NEW ones I made from spruce .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0313.jpg

ALSO

every piece of steel (22G) was TOTALLY rotten .. so I replaced with 14G and also ZINC'd them

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0314.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0315.jpg

and now its ready ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0316.jpg

and finished the inside .

so Progress

pulled the plastic cover off because it was all cracked and missing pieces where it is riveted onto the door ..
"hemed and hawed" about what I was going to do .. I was going to make a mould , and make a completly new one .. but to much time and money involved there , so I decided to repair the holes , and send it off to line-x as well .. it'll work out great . and match the rest of the rig .

hatch cover repaired
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0330.jpg

and sanded and ready for line-x

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0331.jpg

rear hatch is now completly apart , and ready for some line-X
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0332.jpg

no luck in finding rear hatch hinges , so I thought I would try to fix these ones . there siezed solid. I had them soaking for about 2 weeks .. each day , taking them out , and lightly "tapping" with punch and hammer .

and finally , they loosened up , and I was able to take them apart .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0328.jpg

so all cleaned up , and neversiezed .. and now work great .

so a wee bit to post ...

rear section has now been removed again .. time to start working on that .

Originally , the back half sits on a "winnabego" frame , that mounts to the Toyota frame . Bushings were toast , and not worthy of the new set-up .. got me to thinkin'

The Original mounts , I dont think were sufichant , because of all of the "leaks" I hear about , so I thought a softer compound mount would work better with the flexing , and handle a better "sway" of the back 1/2 . So I ended up purchacing some NEW "special" mounts , and some steel to make a new frame .

got it all "tacked up " under the body , so now time to weld it all up .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0335.jpg

boxing the ends .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0337.jpg

another "goofy" part of the Trekkers is the rear lamps .. They have these silly metal " u " brackets that hold the lamps in place .. you have to drill a hole in your lamps , and mount them to the brackets ??? dumb .....

so took the pockets from the 79-83 beds I build , and glassed them into the Trekker

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/Texas%20Trekker/HPIM0336.jpg

Very rough right now .. but at least they will be easy to install , and RE & RE .

so done today ... the lowers anyway ...

today is the last day the tub will be upsidedown ...

also cleaned up the rear hardware , hatch shocks , lock ketch , plate .

hatch shocks seemed to be in great shape , but the hardware was rusty .. so I bead blasted all of it , and cleaned it all up to bare metal again .. zinc'd and painted ... I left the shocks as bare metal .. ran them under my wire brush , and they kind of turned out like a brushed aluminum .. I think they look awesome , so I clear coated .. and now are ready to assemble .

I am also ready to send out the hatch and cover .. I'm also going to send out the interior canopy trim plate to be line-x'd ..

there is one small rust hole on The right side .. front spring hanger , inside box steel .. you can see it in the pic .. it's so minor , I'm just going to weld in a patch , I see NO reason for a fish plate .

one day .. I'm going to clean it all up and POR-15 inside and out .

i'm going to start a new thread for this one .

Vince .. I'm hoping to bring to market for ~ $4500.00 .. COMPLETE , except for the interior .

I might have a cheeper version , with a "you supply hardware & glass " for about 3G's ... not sure yet ..

I still have 1 more restoration unit to do ... then I will be doing the "custom" moulds , and have pieces for "sale"

Big_Ern

no .. as in shipped to you . (freight extra)

I always am interested in doing the install , and paint as well .. but that would be x-tra .

I just dont really know yet , as I 'm not sure even it's it going to be reality yet ? There are so many --> what if's <--
and costs ....

Rear "template" removed , focus on the frame .

4 more on the " TO DO" list !! ;)

I got one more scrached off today

on the original frame .. there is a felt between the frame and glass .. I suspect it's to silence any rattles or scratching on the rear shield . The old stuff was brittle , crusty , and old .. so I replaced it .

hi corey...
yes! any pics and measurements of the back seat would help a lot! robb has already posted some, but they were of his in his truck. i would like to have some pics of just the raw frame so i can see if i can reproduce it exactly.

thanks for the comment about the avatar! my mom took that picture when we were in NM in oct 2007.

i DID drop it off at line-x this morning :) and i finally got to look at the whole thing. it looks great just like it is!! several of the guys there could not believe it was cut up like it was and made longer. they said you did a great job! the owner was there and said the longest guess was it would be ready next saturday, but he was pretty sure they would have it done sooner. they are going to line-x over the seams of the side windows like we discussed on the phone. i got the hatch off, the lock out, the trim panel off and the seal off for them. they are going to do the outside and inside of the hatch and trim piece for the hatch.

just finished up taking the crate apart. i have lots of uses for the scrap wood :)

off to the garage to figure out if i should hang it from the ceiling or build a stand for it to straddle the frame so i can mark the back of the cab!

2 pics of it un-crated at line-x this morning :)
