it does not produce enough air flow for any usefull purpose.
just meant to get the exhaust gasses to burn better through the cats.

Yup. AIR pump. Doesn't rob enough power to speak of, it just clutters up the engine bay and complicates the emissions system. I've found a handy use for them, they produce a decent amount of air when you're really giving 'er, obviously not nearly enough to show any performance gains as a supercharger (yeah I tried it in my early stupid days) but where there's pump pressure there's pump vacuum...if I have a vehicle that has one, I just hook it up backwards to the valve cover breather. Instant crankcase vacuum pump, prolongs seal life at the very least and pro pumps apparently can suck the rings a bit tighter to the cylinder walls. Not advisable for an OHC engine, of course...

Good thinkin Metalman, but defeats the purpose of the PCV valve! Believe it or not, engines are designed to run with the PCV which is actually a controlled vacuum leak. It draws fresh air from the air cleaner through the crankcase and out the PCV valve into the manifold/carb base.

And, not a major thing, but it is putting the crankcase fumes into the enviroment. But look at the Cummins diesel, it does it from factory!

I am aware of all that, which is why I disable the PCV system. Gasoline burns better than crankcase vapours anyways, and a smog pump will suck a helluva lot better than a little vacuum line.

Oh, and I'm not terribly worried about venting crankcase vapours...I'd do it anyways to piss of hippies, though.
