i think being a 89 it is caught between the carbed shit with the electrical crap they attempted and scraped shortly after for a more conventional relay..

i do not know what it be called either sorry Joe...

I wonder if Lucy have one...

we need Jeep God Mikey on this ........

does it just engage the starter like a starter solenoid on a ford?
if so I can tell ya how to use a conventional relay

bakelite
02-06-2007, 09:22 AM
It's the starter relay...89 YJ...just trying to find a part number so I can order a spare.....searched the web, went to every store in town...no one has or can get anything that is even close..it's weird, Lordco ordered 3 in for me from their parts books, 3 different numbers....all different relays. I sure like Jeeps but they are weird lol. [cheers]

Phil, there's a solenoid on the starter, this relay activates it .... pretty sure anyway.

I take it that YJ is a four banger???? if so I think what that does is drop the 12 volts on start up to the fuel pump to 9volts after start up to keep the fuel pump quieter....just bypass it the pump runs better on 12 volts anyways. I believe they eliminated that in 91 cause they found it didnt work.....

Can I have my hero cooke now?????:D

FWIW, that appears to be the same ignition relay as was used in the renix cherokees. Providing it matches that diagram...

Try telling the lordco tools that you want one for an 88 cherokee with a 4.0.

Hey Joe just caught this and that is the same relay as your's the pin for the fuel pump on that pic actually goes to the coil + on the 4.2 YJs to give the coil 12V while cranking. Asked Matt for a part # for ya but I think Matt and I both forgot so I will ask again.

I'd offer to stop by Garry's and get one, but A) I don't go there too often now that I don't have a Jeep (sometimes for the sprint though) and B) I have no idea what that item is, or where it is, heh.

That would be most cool Phil, needs the extra one though for the coil 12v. The one that says fuel pump ballast resister terminal. Otherwise just about any kind of a starter relay will work won't it?[cheers]

epic3
02-07-2007, 02:40 PM
it supplies power to the coil aswell?
if so that will be two relays
otherwise it might just be an ignition input to supply power to that circuit

bakelite
02-07-2007, 03:23 PM
ya 12v to the coil...see Mike's post above

cool just did

Nutbar
02-07-2007, 06:17 PM
the relay only supplies 12V to coil while cranking

and the relay is also the battery junction post for all the Fuseable Links that power the Jeep.

part number for that relay is sr123 cost is $23.00
