i have an 85 chev with a 4-speed manual tranny running on 44`s with 4:10`s for gears. my question is what would be the best option for new gears? i`m thinking 5:13`s but i want to be sure before i buy new ones.
thanks in advance

Whats happening for lockers? Is an OD trans in your future? Are your axles big enough?

I like to fit in gear swaps with other mods because its a significant amount of labour.

My 2 cents. :vroam:

both axles have detroits installed and are your basic one ton axles. as for now there are no future plans for an overdrive tranny but if one comes up for a good price i would buy it.

The cheapest gearsets in the 5's you can get. I would say the steeper the better too. If you don't have 5:13's, then 5:13's will be VERY NAICE, SEXY TIME.

I would run the 5.13s with 44in tires on it, I think I heard that 5.38s are available for the 14b ff now.

i am running a 454 which is basically stock. the truck will mainly be a weekend warrior so it won`t see too many highway miles. i don`t really care for taking it on the freeway with the price you pay for boggers. what does big b run for gears on his rig?

ok if i were too say drop down to a 40 inch tire later on do you think the 5:13`s would be too low?

No I don't think it would be to low I have 40s on the CJ now with 4.56 and I would put it to 5.13 now myself I run the same drivetrain in the jeep as you SBC, 1ton 465 4spd, 60frt 14b rr

B has 4.10 in his too high in my opinion but we are puttin a Black Box in his soon so it will add another 2.72:1 low range and he is now 4L80E auto tranny and autos are more forgiving on gear ratio, the torque converter acts as a torque multiplier when you hammer on it and the engine rpm jumps higher than tranny speed.

My cruiser ran a 350 with a sm465/205 running d60/corp 14 with 4:10 and 44's. Never had a problem with gearing. She easily kept up on the highway and never found an obsticle I couldn't crawl over. I know everyone says to put in the lowest gears you can, but if you got the balls from the bigblock, I'ld just leave it. You'll only loose highway speed and milage.

add a black box or a doubler and leave the difs alone unless it is painful to drive on the street
to put lower gears in it you would have to replace the front detroit and the maybe the rear carrier as well
5.13s are too low for highway driving with 40" tires unoless you have an OD trans
gear it down with a range box for offroad and leave the difs tall for highway is the best it can get

frt gears can probably get thick cut gears and keep the detroit rear is already low gear carrier.

5:13 or 5:38's is the gear that I would run with 44's

ive got 5.13's and a 435(same 1:1 4th) and on the highway im pushing 3300rpm's at 110, not freakishly bad, and im only on 36's(probably only measure 35).

go 5.13, thats what i want when my 60 goes in
