My electrical system has me scratching my head. Sometimes no problems everything works fine. Then for no reason (that I can find yet) nothing, it seems to have a drain on it somewhere.:dontknow:Symptoms are:

dead battery
dim lights
engine rpm's increase
then won't startWhat I've done:

replaced the battery w/ an Optima Yellow top
replaced alt.
rewired stereo, winch, and went over most of the harness
replaced alt. again(multimeter shows 14 volts when running)
eliminated everything I don't need to make it run.Sometimes it seem it won't take a charge and needs to be jumped every time, other times its fine all day for days.

Last weekend it died, so I jumped it, ran it for a bit, turned it off and it started fine, played the stereo with out it running for a while, started in the morning, drove for 2 hours, got gas and it wouldn't start.

I've eliminated as much as I could but now I'm at my wits end.
Could it still be the alt. being tempermental ?
Any suggestions.[cheers]

Hey, I went through the same thing with my Cherokee, and it was the light switch that was fried inside. Sometimes the battery was good, sometimes dead. Good Luck[cheers]

those all point to the alt and if you have replaced those look for a trigger wire.the same thing happened to me and after months of what you are going through i took it to a battery place and he resaudered some wires and that fixed it.

We take all our electrical problems to John's Electrical in New West. He's $78/hr but well worth it. Usually can figure out the problem in an hour. [cheers]

The wiring to the starter is good from what i seen last time walt. Same with the field wire. It is seeing 12v with ign on. Only thing is maybe the field wire has a break in it somewhere so the alt stops charging?

You've probably already tried this but....

Remove the positive battery cable and hook an ammeter/test light in between the cable and the positive post. If there is a drain, start taking out fuses to find what system the drain is in.

Remember to keep your door closed or else the dome light being on will light the test light :)

it be a jeep they ussually dont have dome lights.......

I would suspect a short as well intermitent as most have said it is finding it when it acts up that prove difficult...

good luck next time it does it strt wiggiling different harness's and check for bad grounds for your ignition.....

walter i would start organizing the spagetti wiring under the dash where you have to fuck with to get the gueges and heater going.

I think his piston return springs are shot and might need a bottle of compression too.

its the glow plugs

load test the battery, do amp draw test on starter. see what the alt is putting out..... in amps.... sounds like bad connection somewhere

All fixed, thanks Bob [cheers]

A few contacts were arcing and a new set of matching V belts that were a bit shorter seems to have fixed it. Pushing 14.26 volts from the alt. to the battery and every thing can run at once, so.............
