Im currently running 33s on my jeep YJ with the little 2.5l and I want to know what is the best gears to have in there for road driving. Its not my daily driver but I mainly use it to take camping. So I want gears best for highway but suitable for offroad. And to save someone time im not going to sell it and get a " real truck"

Thats the thing, lower gears(numerically higher) are better for wheelin and higher gears(numerically lower) are better for highway driving because of lower revs.

Personally, i say go with lower gears if you can just for the fact when you need em they really help.

i'd get lower gear's, with that 2.5 high gear you can't get going up any hills

I've got a 4.0L XJ on 33's and I've got 4.56's in the axles. Work awsome for me, but with a 2.5L I'd probably consider 4.88's for best performance.

You will want at least 4.88 with the 2.5 if you are planing on going bigger tires spring for even lower gears now 5.13s or 5.38s

when i had 33's and a 2.5L i ran 4.88's, on street and wheelin was fine.... i did blow up a ring gear though in my d35.... ring gear is small, so teeth on the 4.88 were small, could have been a shitty gear setup also? still don't know, ditched the d35 for a 44....

cdn-xj is right 4.88 is the lowest you can go for a d30....

Kinda doubt it. The pinion was already bloody small at 4.88. I don't think they could go lower.

I'll take that as a compliment. It just adds to my inflated ego that way.
