heres a sweet site, scroll down to the compression ratio part and theres a calculator for what size carb you need, people tend to think putting a Holley 750 double pumper on there stockish motor will make it go wicked fast..

go with edelbrock carb, and the edelbrock performer 400 aluminum intake and if you still got the stock cam you swap it out cause 78-79 had a 4 degree retarded camshaft, this is a good kit to fix it

im buying that kit in the new year for mine

My buddy likes the Holley TA in his 351M. He's got it on an Offy dual-port. Nice strong smooth low-end.

I ran a Qjet on my 351w and my 302 and was geat if you know how to set them up, they are a great carb and there are a shit load of them out there, the only problem I had was going up steep climbs, partly due to the fuel pick up in the front of the gas tank, but it would run all day on it side and never craped out on me while bouncing around, I hope that helps a bit[cheers]

lets go find a hill to prove this.
the truck avenger has no differences then any other holley that I can see.
the floats are still in the front and back and can still have the fuel end up higher then the main discharge nozzles on a climb
when that happens the fuel starts to flow by gravity rather then being metered by vacuum
that makes it run pig rich and flood

rebuild the 400..... and fuel inject it...

be done with the carb bullshit.....

but if ya stay with the carb and it is a worn motor just replace it with a motorcraft origional...... why pay for a good carb when u will not benifit from it.?

Frome Holley's website...
Features an exclusive "No Trouble" metering block that provides flood-free operation at angles up to 40 degrees climbing and 30 degrees on the side and nose down. One piece vent tube eliminates fuel spillover during extreme maneuvers.

alrighty then...ill have to take your word on that...i dont have any personal exsperience wheelin a holley as my holley is on my street truck and the 4x4 is fuel injected....but if he were to run a motorcraft original hed prob be running a holley anywheys...seign as how alot of them were built buy holley, or at least the ones ive rebuilt...

teh best carb for you is the one that works best on your truck. I run a Preformer 600-cfm on my 302 and it runs nice, though a little rich, just because I never got into tuning it very much. Never had a problem climbing or blasting through a mud pit. My uncle swears by Holleys though, he's had them on everything from small blocks to a 572.

Its what works for you, in your budget, with your experience.

I love Holley carbs, just not in a 4x4
the best gasoline carb for a 4x4 is a quadrajet
I like propane for 4x4ing and it is almost half the money
