thought I heard it was not safe to use a trickle charger on a sealed battery.

true or false.

it's a yellow top optima fyi.

I did, on a new one I drained, nothing happened other that my battery was charged again.

the only way i charge and are suposed to charge an optima is with a 2 amp or low amp trickle charger.

the only battery chargers your supposed to use on those are the cetek smart chargers you can use a regular charger but if you use it too much it will wreck the battery and you dont get as good of a charge with a optima its not good to charge at a steady amperage its supposed to vary

trickle charger only puts out 1 amp.

Charging and discharging batteries creates gasses. Vented batteries obviously provide for that. Your average alternator can output 50-100 amps, going in as it's going out, but a trickle charge isn't gonna hurt anything. Trickle charge away...

If you are planning on leaving the charger on all the time, as in storing it, I would make sure it's an automatic charger, meaning when the battery is charged, the charger will recognize it and basically shut off or at least go down to a very small amperage charge (less then an amp).
