I just bought my 77 F250 like a week ago and today i got a driveshaft in it, fuel situation figured out. Its a 351M with a 4 speed and went to test it around the block and when im in 2nd gear and go to gear down to 1st, press the clutch in and try to shift to 1st but it just grinds, it will only go in first gear at a complete stop....is the synchro mesh or something fucked in it? i have another engine and tranny in my 79 that i could always throw in the 77

thanks[27]

isn't that a safety feature ???

i don't think you wanna drop in 1st. while in second.

T18 trannies (Your old 4-speed) are non-synchro'd into first. My Bronco is the same way.

Look for a T19 or a ZF if you have any use for first while driving. But my 302 pushes the Bronc and 33s easy off the line.

the gear is so low and non synchroed is why it grinds. Every type of tranny like that wont like 2-1 downshifts. Just remember that and youll be fine.

does toyota have that in the 5spd for an 82?? mine grinds going into 2nd when im goin like 50-65 and i can cruise to almost 80 in 2nd, or is it probably just fucked?

Most of those trannies even had on the shift ball that they are a 3 speed tranny with a low. Those gears for first are usually straight cut and made for torque, not daily use. My dads new dodge has the getrag 5 in it and he's still not using first, and he probably should, but I'm not buyin him a clutch so he can do whatever he want to it.

ya makes sense, i talked to a mechanic at work said theres no synchro for first gear and you dont really need to gear down to first anyways. The difference between a T18 and a NP435 is that the T18 has a cast cover and the np has a aluminum one right?

No idea on the T18/NP435 Comparison.

I know my T18 rattles and grinds a little in first, just like reverse, but I can pull like crazy in 4Lo, even with the gutless 302 in it.

hey man its a ford what do you expect...i had low expectations when i bought mine so i wouldnt get disappointed when shit breaks or fails...mines got a 351M with a gutless 2 barrel rochester with no air filter and exhaust held on with a coat hanger and part of a bungee cord[15] ...soon to be fixed tho with dual stacks[36]

I know my 4 speed is the same, i cant shift from 2 -1 but i always figured that they were just a 3 speed with a low gear

t18 is cast with a cast top cover t19 cast with aluminum top cover pto on reverse side of the t18 and yes llike they all said 1st is not a syncronized gear with 2nd being 3.74:1 or close to that u should not need 1st for daily driving

three speed with low . no syncro's . dont need 1st unless your pullin or wheelin . great for wheelin toss it in 1st and jump out to fill holes or spot for yourself truck will keep on chuggin along without you.put it in 4 low and 1st you can get out for lunch and still catch it before it gets 100ft away.
