What's the difference between a 4cyl and a 6cyl third/diff?

Can you put a 4cyl third in a 6cyl housing?

Just curious.

no difference in housings. just 85 and older diffs are narrower with smaller axle tubes...86 and newer are wider with larger tubes.

6 cylinder thirds have thicker gears and different bearing and more webing on the casting which is suppose to help stop them from flexing.

Earlier are weaker later are stonger, but they will fit the same housings.

You can swap 4 and 6 cyl 3rd members, V6 housing is thicker around the flange, 4cyl are easier to weld because the carrier is open.
It can be done to v6, but it is a bit more tricky.
