they'll only turn one way, and they should be labled 'free' & 'locked'

Doesn't really matter the order, but I usually lock them first. However, when it comes to unlocking and getting out of 4wd, often if you can't shift out of 4wd due to the drivetrain being bound up, unlocking the hubs and then driving back and forth will help.

why the hell would you leave them locked in all the time? or do you mean on the trail only? If they're locked in on the street you're adding a lot of unnecesary front drivetrain wear, as well and increasing the rotating drag on your drivetrain and reducing your gas milage etc. Hubs are there for a reason, use them.

not to mention this is how you chew out the seals on the toyota inner axles.

i understand that but from what i understand you have a good mechanical ability to do that sorta thing. if i were to go and tell some of my freinds (not mechanically inclined) to go and lock the hubs they'd prolly sit ther and ask me what the hubs are first.

i mean if i know i am going 4x4ing i lock them in at home instead out in the snow, and in winter i leave them in, when roads are snowy

It's simple, put a zap-strap in your fenderwell hanging down and just touching the tire so when your driving it flutters (like hockeycards in the spokes), when the sound stop you have a flat.

Now remember this is what England did.
