View Full Version : SBF V8 vs. the bulletproof I6

Hey im totally stumped on what engine i want to put in my 78 F-150 shortbox. I have two engines sitting in my garage the bulletproof 300 I6 and a 351W. I have 4.10 gears in my 9" and 44Hp, i have an NP435 tranny with an Np205 transfer case (the truck came stock with the I6 oddly enough), with 35" tires. Now heres my problem, this truck is gonna be a daily driver, i pull a lot of long hills, and i go 4X4in almost every weekend. I prefer to do trails rather than mud bogging. If i chose an engine it is gonna be rebuilt, shaved head(s) and 3-angle valve grind, a 4 barrel intake (offenhouser, or performer), rv cam, headers, a performer 600cfm carb ( i got it free band new from a buddy), and a dual exhaust with headers. I priced both out and they are gonna be within a few hundred bucks of each other. Now i am wondering what kind of a difference in power there is gonna be between the two and what engine is gonna get better mpg/drivability on and off-road. Any help would be great guys.

i would go with the 300 i6 less maintenance and easier to work on
only down side.... the exhaust and intake problems sharing fastners.....

u could swap in a 1345 tcase for the 2:72 low range vs the crappy ratio the 205...

ive really liked the 205 so far, ive got the 6.64 low range gear on the 435 tranny so if i feel like crawling i just put the tc in 4lo and the tranny in 1st, man is that ever a low range, i dont even press the gas and is climbs steep hills like nothing

true that and the 205 is a tough t-case i just dont like the way it clocks...

i be runnin a 302 t18 (1st 6:32 ) and the 1345 with 4:10 gives me 70:1 stock reduction forward and 82:1 reverse reverse is 7:44

in the BII

what i really want is that Blackbox......

but the I6 does have a respectable bottom torque that never ends...just dont like produce much@ high revs

ohh and im even considering a 302, would that be the best of both worlds?

yeah the I6 does have a nice sweet spot of torque, mine sucked in about 4l of water at postill last year, i tore it downa and absolutely nothing was wrong with it, i just needed to clean off the bearings.

bulletproof engines, those six bangers are. But ive never ever driven a vehicle with a V8 so im kinda curious about the power difference and the sound of a V8 is just soo hard to beat.

My old mans BlueChip forkift at work has a Ford 6 in it, the Industrail modle, its got and has had for longer than ive been alive, about 2 inches of hard oil and other shit shitting on the valve cover....you can praticaly see the shit puke out...every morning the labourer check the oil, tops it off if needed, and attempt to fire it up, some how every day he gets it going, put the peddle to the floor, it stumbles its way to about half the RPM it shoudl be at with that much fuel and goes all day like that.....

go with the six. mine sounded awsome, with cam, intake 4 brl, no cats, and a glasspack. choose a low rpm cam, i made the mistake of goin for a little extra power upto 5gs, and lost alot of bottom end torque i coulda used on the trails. i took the motor out and am re rebuilding it, dual quads[36] and a header, more head work, compression up to 11:1, ignition upgrade, and balanced crank, and then throwing it in a 2wd. gonna be nuts. oh did i mention NOS[36] hoping for round 300+ ponies before bottle. around 240 when i pulled it.

build the 351Wheezer
more cubes, more parts available

go with the 6 and sell me the 351

the 351w will definatly get more bang for your buck at higher RPMs. Might even get more power.

But the I6 will have WAY more torque. but do NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, take it over 4000rpm or so. You will kill it. I did.

depends how ya build it. i took mine to 4500 all the time and it loved it there. depends on what cam u got, mine was quite aggressive, i raced a freind with a 351, C6 and 35 AT"S and slayed him with my 36 swampers on, and 373 gears[36]

ok, what I forgot:

Get aftermarket cam gears. Then it might survive.

yea i got a i6 in my truck heard they last a long time b4 rebuild, and yea i cant rev it that high but i can crawl up any hill.[36]

*Hint hint* I have a 300 that needs to be put back together. Perfect for modding. ;)

I love my 351W's......but they are in Mustangs, not trucks

11-14-2006, 02:38 PM
yea i dont reve mine pased 4000 rpm i useally go to 3000 in 3rd b4 sifting into 4th

11-14-2006, 06:12 PM
go with the 351W w/ a tourquey cam, E7 heads off a roller 5 litre (better flow and higher compression, youll need to drill out the bolt holes on the head the bigger 351 bolt size) flat top pistons, performer rpm intake, headers and 4 bbl carb, should give you roughly 300 horse or more

Go with the windsor their cheap to work on parts are inexpencive and their an alll around tough engine. In my opinion the windsor is the pride of ford. If im not mistaken the 302 and 351 are the same block style just different borexstroke so it comes down to how much fuel u wan to burn weather your looking for fuel eficency or power but if you running 410s gears id put in the 351 . Beacause of the golden rule///...... Biger is Better
Thats wat she said at least.
