View Full Version : 231 --> 242 swap in cherokee

looking to do some upgrades to my 88 cherokee and get er ready for some wheelling. basically stock 88 cherokee 4L, auto with a 231, d30 vacum disco diff and d35.
i pulled a 6" lift and a no disco d30 from my parts jeep that had a 242 with hack n tap SYE, and custom d shafts in it.
aside from the linkages for the 4wd shifter is there anything else that needs to be done to swap the t case in? the front diff is straight forward swap.
thanks for the input [cheers]

21 spline already checked. it was a good score, got the jeep for cheap and already made a few bucks off it

You will need to use the D shafts from whichever tcase you use (231 and 242are slightly different lengths) and I believe you will need the whole shifter assembly because the gates are different.

thanks Mike, thats what i was thinking about the shifter gate thingy, luckily i saved all those parts when i removed it all.. i will be using the d-shafts from the parts jeep that had the 242 as i am using the lift and whole works from it, just going to buy some new shocks for it as the old ones have missing bushings and barpins.
i haven't took the rear leafs out yet.. any tips on how to make it easier. just hoping i don't break the welds on the nutsert? thingy when I go to take the shackles out

If you want to sell that 231 when your done I'll be interested, also if you need anything for the 242 my old wagoneer sat outside Mikey's has still got one in it. [cheers]
