Can't wait for these puppies to come out of R&D.
Bolt on portals for my 80 series axles 1.4:1 reduction, should go great with the crawler box. Oh, i think i just wet myself!

so how many gears backwards does that give you? or do they have a flipped center section as well
scrub radius is horrid
wonder if it will be cheaper then a set of 404s

As opposed to these fake ones, which are the real ones, Mog,Volvo,or Hummer?
Why replace the whole axle and suspension when you could bolt on a portal set up?
Better not add that heavy winch and bumper to the truck either
I myself have never seen a knuckle bearing fail that wasn't completely neglected.
I would however truss the axle to knuckle ball area just for shits.

i didnt call em fake's tool...

i meant why not put a true portal axel on.. better clearance .. i dont know what the difference in gearing would be..

cuz most people are replacing axel's and changing the suspension set up anyway's.

Better not add that heavy winch and bumper to the truck either

yah.... unless your planning on really getting bent in those planter's out side of sear's.

Not being all that well versed in the area of portal axles.......

It does look like there would be a whole whack of stress on those king pins!!!!

im pretty sure even the unimog 404 axles have such a high reduction that it would be stupid slow below a 40" tire

FZJ80
09-26-2006, 09:36 PM
They are being made by or for Marks4wd in Aus. most likely avail. through Advance Adapters when done.
From what i can gather the reduction is not near as much as the "real" portals, 1.4:1 so u could run the larger tire sizes keeping your stock tall gears and retain the strength they impart.
If you look at some of the other portal axles the measurement from the trunion bearings to the wheel flange is compairable, as well there are people out there running 2" + wheel spacers with no ill affect.
As for strength, i suppose if you compair a 3+ ton rated axle against a portal setup of this kind it comes up wimpy in comparison, but not everyone wants to go car crushing or has large hp on tap to turn all that extra mass.
I would bet there are a few who would want the added ground clearance without the added expence of creating a new truck from the frame on down incuding off size tires and custom made wheels that are at best ugly.
From what i am told these will let you run off the shelf tire & wheel combos.
Just this tools opinion.

Hey Daryl, how are ya? Still got the Jeep?

exo_toy
09-26-2006, 09:47 PM
so if you don't want to go all out hardcore then why bother with these....wouldnt t-case gears make more sense???

FZJ80
09-26-2006, 10:36 PM
Well theres hardcore and then theres indestructable. It's like the old saying " speed costs, how fast can you afford to go". The idea behind these portals is added ground clearance and a more bolt on install, not so much gear reduction.

exo_toy
09-26-2006, 11:00 PM
I could understand that, but I bet there pretty pricey for a inch or two clearance

johny5
09-26-2006, 11:16 PM
have these things been seen by the pirate4x4 crew ?, just curious what they have to say

FZJ80
09-27-2006, 04:33 PM
Actually 4" of lift.
Will have to see what the price will be to tell if they are cost affective, but a guy can hope can't he?

Explorer guy418
09-27-2006, 05:05 PM
Hey Daryl, how are ya? Still got the Jeep?

ya mone done some stuff to her since u last seen'er

Explorer guy418
09-27-2006, 05:05 PM
thats gay LOL looked like a bogger to me haha

tnerb
09-27-2006, 10:34 PM
so they give u 4 more inches of clearance and there also gonna lift ur truck up 4 more inches. i know the last thing i want is 4 more inches of lift. so then most people would have to re work all there suspension while putting these dumb things on. there comes a point when u need to stop putting money into a toy axle.

ToyotaHEAD
09-28-2006, 09:34 AM
Just curious.... but do they make a set for the rear as well... I am assuming so, cuz how else would you address the difference in ratio between front and rear. Running two different ratio diffs to me seems awkward...

StinkFinger
09-28-2006, 11:13 AM
im sure they do who makes them
