The Cherokee had a/c at one point, and still has the pump...it's a York, sits sideways, can anybody tell me if it's useable for onboard air?

There isn't much tech about it, it is quite simple actually. You will need (to do a top notch pro style install) . . .

A/C compressor (you have already) (and any A/C pump will work as an air compressor)
air intake filter
air tank
pressure switch
relay
toggle switch
for safetys sake a high pressure blow off valve
various brass fittings and air hose
optional-Air pressure guage
Install

The intake side is easy put the air filter on the inlet port of the compressor

the pressure side, plumb the pressure port to the air tank with the pressure switch, blow off valve, and pressure guage in this line (I usually put them right by the pump for ease of install and service). Wire the toggle switch to a key on power source and then out to the pressure switch from the pressure switch to the switch side of the relay, wire the work side of the relay to battery posative (with a fuse by the battery) and to the wire for the clutch on the A/C pump. Start the truck flip the toggle and the pump should pump untill it reaches the pressure switch cut off pressure.

Plumb a line out from the tank to somewhere convenient for you to put an air line quick connect coupler and grab yourself a 25 foot air line and fittings and whatever air tools you want to use and you are in business.
