is it possable cuz my buddy has a 305 and needs to get rid of it and i have a 84 that i need a engine for so i was wondering is it worth it or even possable

It is possible will take a lot of work the frame rails are kinda close together for a 90* V engine making it tight for exhaust and in an 84 you might have to get the rad support and rad from a 91 and later to give you a little more length, and the tranny won't handle a V8

sweet yeah just get some block huggin headers and make custom exhaust and i can alwasy fab up some rad mounts or just get one out of a junker

it has been done, the oil filter will hit the frame without a remote set up. and even at that there is very little clearance to the hood. seen it done once, was kinda nigger rigged, but i think it could be done much nicer

oh yeah i have all year to get it road worthy so id do a nice job and make it look gooder i wouldent hack it to shit

I've seen quite a few MJ's with various engines stuffed in them (front body is the same as an XJ). I mean that as in a ford 302, a AMC 360, a dodge 318, a chevy 350, a GM 3.4 (easy swap) and a 258 L6. (That last one made me go 'uh?')

Basically, you'll have trouble with the headers and the hood. The hood will need to be cut open, and a cowl installed if you want it to look half decent. The headers get darn tricky, to say the least. That leads to farther complications with things like the starter, and oil filter... Also, any engine with the dist. at the back of the block will be a total PITA.

I'd personally not bother. 305 is a shitty engine, but still has enough power for you to poke your eye out!

yeah i should just put a 4L in to it just cuz that would be the best distion but its a bitch to find one and performace parts for it anr so expensive so i was just trying o find a engine that will fit in it easy with some fabrication and shit to make it work so im open to ideas

84-85 XJs won't fit a 4.0L Jeep 6 in 86 they changed the shape of the firewall to fit the 4.0 for 87

You can fix that.

08-15-2006, 10:26 PM
Yeah you can fix anything if you want to spend the time or money but the firewall in the 84 85 xj would have ot be cut out and replaced with one 86 and newer along with the heater box and dash, but this guy was just talking about an easy swap a swap that involves major body work doesn't sound very easy to me

with a lot of brute force and ignorance

well a guy at my work is wiked good at fabin shit he build a custom 4 link for his runner and its dope so he is gona help me out i think im gona fit the 305 in it i got the time and money well it will come slowly but time i have alot of

get ready for some changes to the firewall. you don't have to replace the whole fwall but you do have to make an indent in it about 3" deep by 8-10" wide(same with installing the 4.0l) i've seen 3 done with 350 but they also re-inforced the rails as the uni body will twist like a mofo with a v8 in there and that kinda flex is not what you want. good luck

I prolly have a spare set of frame mounts left from my XJ engine swap, bolt in place of the stock ones and require late style motor mounts. Yours if ya want em.
