Hello all. I am looking for some 4.56 gears to put into my 4runner. I want to run 33's. Will that be a ok combo? I drive this thing on the highway, so I just want to make sure it will still be good for that. Thanks for any info.

I'm guessing you have 4.10's now? I just swapped in 4.56's and I run 32's. Its just perfect on the hwy with the 4cyl. If your IFS then there are quite a few 4.56 combo's out there in 1990+ rigs especially automatics. If your going to buy brand new and regear then it makes more sense to just get 4.88's.

yup. 8" fits solid F&R axles.

They're still in my truck right now, but I've got new gears, just need to get around to installing them

would be best suited to the tire size on betty

altho with the 4.3 in stoopid truck they would work good in there too

No probs take your time, I gots a few projects going at the moment too, lol. But I guess they were offered to dude first, but if he don't take them, we need to work something out. Hey are you running 15" or 16" rims?

Pudge
08-15-2006, 10:24 AM
Hmmm, Betty would be good to have better gears for more hwy driving, as Stoopid Truck tops out pretty quick on the highway, but offroad I sometimes wish I was geared lower???????

Big_Ern
08-15-2006, 10:24 AM
they won't work for him since he's got ifs which used 7.5" diff in the front

StinkFinger
08-15-2006, 10:25 AM
I would put them in betty is betty solid axle front and rear

Pudge
08-15-2006, 10:34 AM
both trucks are stock 4:10s, Betty is a 5 speed, Stoopid Truck is a Th350

StinkFinger

litle slow is betty a solid axle front

Big_Ern
08-15-2006, 10:37 AM
ya, its an 85

Pudge
08-15-2006, 10:38 AM
yessieree bob solid axle. might be a parts truck soon if I don't get the head gasket done soon, lol. I may rape the new brakes off her and swap into S/T

Big_Ern
08-15-2006, 10:39 AM
I would put the gears in betty since you've got the 4.3L power/torque and the extar reduction of the th350 already in s/t.

4.37s will give betty a bit better get go, but increase the hwy rpms a bit. Would be a good match with 33's imo

coo, then it is a plan. Keep me posted when they are out. Next time we hook up we'll sit down and negotiate. What size rims you running? Why I ask is I just picked up from work 2, 16" 6 hole black Daytona's, I'm gunna use one for a spare with a 315/75r16(35") Pro Comp, but I have one left, they were returned as out of round, but whatever they look brand new and for a spare would be great.

Big_Ern
08-15-2006, 10:48 AM
I'm running 15's but it would work for a spare. if I come across a cheap 36 for a 16" rim I'll let ya know, but don't worry about holding it for me or anything[cheers]

Pudge

roger that, I'll see if we have any adjustments around here.

What did Toyota put in for stock gears in the '79 and '80 version? Just curious.. I've heard so many different ratios that it's hard to pick one :)

arjan

The early 2nd gens had 4.56s with the 5spd and the big tire package (31" tires), and the autos had the 4.88s.
I was running 33s with 4.56s and an 5spd which worked very well (91 4Runner)

The elockers on the newer 4Runners go like this:
auto V6 (limiteds, most common) 4.30
5spd V6 4.10
5spd 4Cyl 4.56 (very rare but out there)

So back in the 2nd gen days 31" was considered a "Big Tire"? That's hilarious! Big Tires prolly meant BIG optionBUCKS for a small tire

Here is the scene at the Stealership ----> [kicknuts]

For a stock vehicle 31" is not bad.

I just was looking at a toyota specs page and it showed me running 3.83's right now. I got the codes off the inside of my door---R150F meant that it was 3.83.

arjan
08-15-2006, 10:06 PM
R150F is your 5spd transmission

Dr. B
08-15-2006, 10:10 PM
ah, well then. So, does it still mean I am running 3.83 gears?

Mine says A02A / R150F. I don't think it's quite right on mine but this site gives a good overview.
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_axles.html

The A02A is the axle code.

arjan
08-15-2006, 10:23 PM
We've found a number is discrepancies in this second table, so don't take it as gospel. The first table has so far proven to be accurate.

^ this would apply to mine because A02A on my '97 4Runner came with 3.91 gears. It also is an 8" axle with 4 pinions.
I upgraded to the elocker with 4.30 gears, so it doesn't matter anymore to me.
