I was wondering the difference from a regular Detroit to a Detroit soft locker? Looking at getting one on ebay, everyones saying there alot of money so is $550cad a good price?

Just wondering the difference between them?

A soft locker is just a modified version of the original detroit locker I believe they changed the shape of the teeth and the springs in the original detroit so it wouldn't be as noisey and as harsh engaging as the original.

Murd0c

so would it be better to get the soft locker? is there a big difference.

I do know it's 30 spline if that matters at all.

thanks Mikey [cheers]

Isn't the soft locker a lunch box style?

Growly Gorilla

pretty sure it is,the original detroit replaced the carrier.cept in the 14bff.

Isn't the soft locker a lunch box style?

depends on the diff soft replaces your internals uses your carrier

full detroit again depending on application full carrier like c-clip types...

ii can check the documentation that came with mine but that was my understanding

2 types one just the internals replaced like spiders and sidegears act...

the full detroit ships ready toinstall once bearings are pressed on..

and ya that is a wicked price i paid 560 us inc mater install kit.

Detroit SL is the 'real' locker, it is just the latest version.

yeah I see that now, confused by the name....had to order the Detroit for my 8.8 and thought he might of meant the EZ locker.[cheers]

as MJ said the soft locker is a regular detroit full carrier (unless 14 bolt,or split case 70 etc) etc but with dampening springs , pretty much if not all the detroits made for the toyota 8 or other non industrial applications would be soft lockers.
Eaton bought out Trachtech so now they are made by Eaton

I don't know if they are made by Eaton yet.
when I was at SEMA talking to the Eaton rep they were still being made in Ireland
Eaton's online literature was/is second to none and their distribution network is enormous, all great news for us that they bought Detroit.

the Soft locker is NOT a lunchbox locker it is the latest version of the original Detroit locker. The Detroit EZ locker is their version of a lunchbox locker.

I believe Eaton now has Detroit/Trac Tech if you call Detroit/Trac Tech you get the Eaton office.

that is truly confusing so what would a lunch box locker be?

just the guts and oem carrier?

Nutbar
07-26-2006, 01:44 PM
Yes the "lunchbox lockers" are the lockers that replace your spider gears in your original open carrier such as the Lock Rites, Aussie locker, EZ locker

Thanks guys [cheers]

was just unsure cause I always see a detroit soft locker and a full detroit and it was a bit confusing. at least it's the full detroit and not no ez-locker bs.

This it what I'm trying to get right now I know most of the bidding is at the end but at least if I do win I don't have to pay duty[36] [36] [36] [36]

Reece, if you are looking to order one up from the states, I am as well. We could do a buy from a company maybe.

Reece, if you are looking to order one up from the states, I am as well. We could do a buy from a company maybe.

On ebay there $550 cad. I can get them shipped to my broker in blaine and it will save the duty(hopefully) thats the max price they go for on here.

If I do end up winning this one, I will hook you up with all the details if you like[cheers]

These are the ones I found on ebay, of course the bottom 2 are the ones we want. I've been watching these 2 sellers for 6months now. prices and everything doesn't change at all.

I remember trail-gear having a very good price on them as well. Might be a bit more (keep in mind shipping is also free, so thats a decent savings), but at least if you got warrenty issues you'll have a real company to deal with rather than some ebay seller.

Murd0c
07-26-2006, 03:16 PM
The detroits $495us at trail gear so the price isn't all that bad. just want to kinda stay away of getting raped by customs.

EIEIO

I can get one for $710 (taxes in) from a buddy @ EBI

Murd0c
07-26-2006, 03:28 PM
That a good deal up here, but still buying from trail gear or even marlin(ame price) we would save money. Would your buddy give us a better deal if we got 2?

EIEIO

are you certain there is duty on a detroit?
check the country of origin

Murd0c
07-26-2006, 10:23 PM
theres duty on all products being bought outside of Canada I thought?

Big_Ern
07-26-2006, 10:28 PM
no, just GST & PST if its made in the usa, canada or mexico. If its made overseas you will have to pay duty, GST & PST

altho truck parts they never usualy check so i just say its made in the usa

m j
07-26-2006, 11:15 PM
if you use UPS or Fedex you will be nailed a BROKERAGE FEE of about $50 (on a shipment worth $500cdn) plus the GST and PST but no actual duty.
Duty on North American made auto parts has been 0% for over a decade now.

Big_Ern
07-26-2006, 11:44 PM
UPS brokerage fees vary a lot. I've seen up to $50 on a $160 US made part[16]

Trevyota had $300 worth of stuff from Marlin and got dinged $98 in brokerage & gst/pst

Murd0c
07-26-2006, 11:47 PM
I havn't had that much problems. the big stuff I send Sue down there and she just puts on a nice smile and gets away with it

Big_Ern

we're talking aboiut if you get ups to ship the satuff to your door. Using a broker is the best way to go
