View Full Version : Too Hot in the Kootenays!

Way too hot, almost too hot to be out quadding, but not quite! :D Fortunately we had a few mines that provided "natural" A/C for us to cool off at!

Our adventure took us up Springer Creek near Slocan city, put on 120km or so, rode some great trails, and found a cool gold mine to check out!

First stop, the "dry" lake. Usually by this time of the year, it is dry. Shows what kind of snow pack we had this year! The CanAm 800 had to play in the water!

I didn't see any bears, but Speedy and Claudio "Say" they did. :D [stoned]

There were these tracks at the lake. Grizzly? I think Blacks retract their claws.

21407

Also at the lake, was the remains of this tree which we are pretty sure was hit by lightening not too long ago. It was split open from top to bottom, and there were 10' long pieces on the other side of the lake!

21462

After the lake, we headed up through the trees along an old pack trail used by miners around the late 1800's/early 1900's. Sweet ride through the trees!

21454

About half way through the ridge trail is this viewpoint of the Slocan valley looking south.

21457
21453

Hard to make out, but that is a fire lookout on top of the nearest ridge.

21424

Further along the ridge trail where it narrows to about 20' wide at best.
21456
21455

We checked out the Meteor mine to see what was left. The snow gave it a good beating this year as most of the outer structures have collapsed finally. It was cool to see ice 3' thick inside the lower adit! Going from 30 plus degrees in the sun to under 10 sitting just inside the entrance was awesome!

21443
21445

This is a good view of where the sleds were climbing out of the bowl last winter. I should put a link to those pics here, but can't be bothered! :D

21442

A view of the Valhallas across the valley.

A small obstacle on the way down to Chapleau creek from the Meteor mine.

Wayne showing us how the CanAm climbs. Doesnt' show it in the pic, but it was a pretty steep little hill! Wouldn't want to power out part way up this one!

Followed my "instincts" and found this old gold mine. Always a neat feeling to find these old workings that are over 100 years old!

21425
21426
21427
21428
21429
21430

We were searching for another old mine that I've done some reading up on, but were cut short by Ministry of Forests "improvements" [16] Why they have to reslope an old mining road is beyond me. They could have left a trail wide enough for the quads, but now it is left to hikers and animals.
21420
21421

Speedy decided to have fun on this old bike he found left behind from some hippies camp!
21459
21460
21461

After locating Claudio when he missed a turn [f] , we headed over to the Ottawa mine, but had another challenge to cross first!

Only after getting all the quads across the broken bridge did we look to see what kind of shape the "old" bridge was in, and saw that other atvers had already made a trail through and across it. [27] Couldn't pass up a little challenge like this anywas!

21410
21409

Wandered into the Ottawa mine about 1000' or so. What a relief from the mid 30's it was outside!

21448
21449
21451
21450
21452

Came across this box in the Ottawa.
21423

Then looked inside and saw this................... very old dynamite, not a nice thing to see! Walked very carefully passed this point thinking "I hope a rock doesn't fall from the ceiling onto it!"

21422

Made it out of the Ottawa safely and headed uphill to 6600' to check out our last destination for the day, the Little Tim mine.

how do you find out about the old mines locations? something i'd be instrested in doing...

This website has all the info you need to locate any old mine in BC. I have spent waaayyyyyy too much time on it! :D
http://webmap.em.gov.bc.ca/mapplace/minpot/minfmap.cfm#

And, along with a bunch of 40 year old maps, I have an old mining book of the West Kootenays from the '50's which has underground maps of the mines along with info on what kind of metals and amounts taken from each mine.

The "climax" mainline sounds really familiar. I think it is the new road to the Little Tim mine which used to have a gate.

I gotta send you a PM on directions to the Tillicum mine. Looking at the map, I can see a couple of old trails up Tillicum Mtn. Heading up there in a few weeks!

And SheLizard, I figured the bear tracks were probably no more then a day old. It was pretty hot up there al week, and the tracks weren't dried out yet! Would have been nice to see a Grizzly........................ while on the quad that is!

That was crappy timing on your trans! Will be heading out on the Monday of the long weekend, got plans next weekend. I'm guessing you probably have plans for the long weekend, but if not, going to try to get out Sunday too. Heading up to Nakusp mudbogs for the day Saturday to watch Speedy break his junk, and Jeepnut pull him back to the pits on the Grizz! [f] :D

We didnt' crawl into the Meteor with the ice, not the least bit safe! But, the ice looked like it went back about 40-50' from what I recall? Maybe more, but not much. It ices up so badly at the entrance from the airflow coming through, that's why active mines will have a door or a tarp at the entrance to keep the wind/cold down to a minimum.
