one of those 2 treatments shortens the life of the gears. I believe it is the heat treating. The gears are stronger, but they wear out faster. it is only reccomended for "racing applications".

A lot of the time people think that the "racing" grade is strongest or best but they are usually made for limited use and to be replaced more often. This dosent only apply to gears. Not directing this at you Big Ern, just throwing the info out there!

drag race gears are actually softer, it's a different set of heat treating from the get go, it lessens the brittleness of the gears so the shock load of hitting the throttle of a 1000-2500hp alchol powered funny car forcing all that power through a ford 9 inch... if it is too hard it will shatter.

ya i realize that. But good to let everyone else know

like sjx said, it softens them up which decreases durability, but increases strength a lot by making them less brittle and thus less prone to breaking under high shock loads
