View Full Version : Damaged ring gear.. driveable?

So my carrier bearing took a dive yesterday and in it's suicide it damaged the ring gear..

I put a new bearings in it today to hopefully make it driveable.. and it is great.. until I let off the gas..

The coast side of the teeth on the ring gear are damaged...

My question is.. is this okay to drive on temporarily.. say to the pickapart and back with a new axle...

OR.. could I remove the ring gear and drive on in front wheel drive...

The bearings are good.. backlash is correct.. so I'm nearly 100% the ring gear is the problem..

Also this is on my cherokee.. so removing the pinion gear isnt really an option because of the slipyoke on the transmission..(no shaft = no slipyoke = fluid everywhere!)

The worst you could do is break it completely, and you're getting a new axle anyway so you may as well drive on it. Or see if any of your friends want to make a trip to PaP

I had the same thought.. well f*ck it.. im getting a new one.. I'm a BCAA member.. i'll drive it til the wheels fall off and then call a tow..
