I got me a 87 suburban, its gas and propane,..
runs great off propane, but as soon as i switch it to gas it stalls and doesnt start...
any ideas,..
oh,.. and when its running, you can smell propanr really bad!...

id say fuel pump or fuse.

sounds like your propane is really rich(unburnt fuel odour?) also your pump might not be pumping enough pressure or could you filter could be filled with rust.(for some reason folks seem to think it is fine to leave the tank empty when they are on propane most of the time[16] )

just go straight propane!!!!!!!!!!!!![f]....u will be much happier and have more power cause u can bump up ur timing and save 60cents alitre at the same time....[51]

i doubt it will make good power on LPG, those 80s tbi motors are real low compression IIRC
adding a set of close chamber heads might help?

make sure the injectors are flowin fuel , what system is on the truck?? ohg? viallie? impco?

i am assuming when going pane that u go carbed propane... it is way simpler to do and way cheaper and less to go wrong........yup set of heads a air gap intake and pane set the dist and good to go......;)

well i figured it out,.. i tore apart the wiring harnessand found several proken wires,.. reconnected em, and now she runs great,..
Ijust wanted it to run off both, cause it sucks to run out of propane in the bush!... at least if i keep gas in the tank, i got some getting home fuel!..lmao!
besides dont they have more power with gasoline than it doeswith propane?

thanks for the replies guys,.. ialso changed the fuel filter as per barracudas suggestion, i think it was barely lettin fuel though, cause when iput gas in it, it only dribbled out..lmao!
runs great on both now,.. but stillhave the bad smell of propane.
Ill post up the model and type of system tomorow ...

propane is 112 octane just to start with.....and with being on dual fuel unless ur dist is comp controlled u will have no power on pane cause the dist is setup for gas!!!!!! so going straight propane when possiable is the way to go......but as for ur setup yes u will have more power on gas then pane....[51]

propane is 112 octane just to start with.....and with being on dual fuel unless ur dist is comp controlled u will have no power on pane cause the dist is setup for gas!!!!!! so going straight propane when possiable is the way to go......but as for ur setup yes u will have more power on gas then pane....[51]

so if i run it on propane only,what do i need to do to the distributer to make it have more power??

if it's running rich on propane the diaphram in the mixer probly has a hole in it

start it and listen for a vacume leak for starters

if u are stting it up for straight pane then u must us a lock out plate in the dist so it will not advance past 28-30 degrees at full advance!!!!!
u want full advane in at about 1000-1800 rpm
u will need somebody with the proper timing light!!!!!

with my chevy going from gas to straght pane i gained 18hp and 40lbs tourqe!!!!! i had went to a dyno in ktown!!!!![41]

Hey CORC i was just wondering if any of this was done before it was sold? or should i look into this stuff?...i kno its still running rich i think ..smells alot....what should i do ???
