I'm getting the 8.8 cleaned up and ready to put into the 90 cherokee. Right now I've got 31's to put on and I may go to 33's sometime in the future. The jeep is a 2nd vehicle - mostly around town driving to get to the trails. I'll use the Audi for long road trips. The jeep will see some highway miles on summer holidays, for example.

So....the jeep has 3:55's now and the 8.8 has a limited slip with 3:73's

I have read that for 31" tires the rule of thumb is 4:10, and for 32,33" tires I should be looking at 4:56 or 4:88.

I've never done gears before but I am mechanically competent and have a good supply of tools and really do want to do this myself.

One biggie I'm not sure of is the limited slip - does that get changed when I change the gears?

What are others running with 31s and 33s?

BTW, I have the 4.0 and auto

TIA

I have 4.10s in my Comanche with 33s and a 4.0 auto and I would prefer to have 4.56s (the 4.10s were cheap I found used gears).

The 8.8 you don't have to change the carrier (your limited slip) but on the Dana 30 frt you will have to change the carrier to go to 4.10s or 4.56s I think the gear split on the 30 is 3.73 and down and 3.91 and up.

Thanks Nutbar, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

So what kind of coin am I looking at to replace the D30 carrier and gears?

Also, for those who have swapped gears themselves, how did you find the job? I've heard some say it's a nightmare, and others - a piece of cake....

The carrier can be had out of a junkyard relativly cheap. Sorta. The 4cyl XJs and a bunch of YJs came with 4.10s factory, which you can use for the carrier, or take the whole gear set.

If you want to go with 4.56, you can actually get HPD30 gears out of the junkyard, BUT, it's beyond rare. It's sorta a "I know a guy who knows a guy" thing.

A new gear set will probably run you 200ish. A new carrier is probably 70-100. While you've got the front apart I'd suggest a locker or LSD if the budget permits.

I was selling a HPD30 4.10 and lower Detroit Truetrac, but then I decided to put it in my XJ. Funny how that keeps happening.

i run a dana 30 and 8.8 out back both with 3:55 and 33'' tires......not to bad but usually I am in 4 low so i am not on and off the gas so much....also saves the clutch....speaking of on/off the gas...do you guys have a hard time steadying the gas pedel on the rough trails....i am constintly reving the gas, even though I try so hard to steady it....pain in the ass.Thats the one thing i like about toy.the super stiff pedel.
