Couldn't have asked for better weather (again!) for a day of quadding and exploring some mines! We started out at Lemon Creek up the Slocan Valley and put on over 100 kms riding some old mining roads and trails. No bears today, but lots of signs including a couple dozen spots where one had been digging out alders looking for bugs!

First stop was up Monument Creek looking for an old mine. The road started out in great shape, but quickly turned too rough even for a quad.

A view down the valley from the Monument workings

Didn't find much for workings, but we also didn't want to hike straight up the slope in the heat!
19737

We moved on to climb up Mineral Creek to the ridge just below Mt. Ruppel. Elevation of about 7000'! Still some snow to play in too!

And a couple of nice alpine lakes, will hike into them one of these trips up here

Had good luck finding mines that we haven't seen before. I've done some reseach on Minfile on them, so it's nice to actually see them.

Some nice waterfalls located right beside the mine.

Old pack trail up to the mine
19743

Perfect end to the ride was finding the mine, The Chapleau. The road up was completely grown over in alders, for about 4 km or so we had to inch our way through them because we couldn't see where the road was! One wrong turn and a wheel would have dropped off the side! Well worth the ride though!

Always kind of eeiry looking back at the entrance the first time inside a mine!
19721
19716

Lots of little stopes (small rooms) off to the sides of this mine.
19722
19724
19723

I wasn't willing to trust the tracks across this hole!

19718

But Wayne's curiousity got the better of him! Fortunately, the tracks are still in really good shape, along with the rest of the mine.

Awesome pics! I've always wanted to find old mines but never knew where to go. Can you get up there with a truck or is the road too narrow?

Awesome pics! I've always wanted to find old mines but never knew where to go. Can you get up there with a truck or is the road too narrow?

You could, if you don't mind custom pinstriping! 4-5 km of straight alders! Most of the time I couldn't see the road directly in front of the quad, and had to inch along just to make sure I didn't drop a wheel over the edge!

Lizard, the last mine is in really good shape, and good ventilation from the raises. Will be going back in the fall when the leaves (and all the bugs on them!) are gone!

Mines that we've been in? definitely 30 to 40, mines that we've found/explored around, in the hundreds! And lots more to be found around here, then we'll have to start exploring the rest of BC!

Sparky, definitely going to make a week trip down that way. With just starting the new job this year, I won't be taking holidays until next year. Fortunately my boss was great and agreed to 3 weeks/year starting next summer! [36] Putting aside at least a couple of those for quadding trips away from the West Kootenays.

Still planning the Porcupine ride for Saturday July22. Hope you can make it! [cheers]

i always wondered what the inside of a mine looked like

I'll only enter a mine that has good airflow in it. Basically at the door like this one, if I can feel a breeze coming out, I know there is fresh air inside. If there is no airflow, I stay out! Kinda like the Teddy Glacier mine way back inside, hey John! You never know!

Watty and Highwaystar, I'll definitely post when we make the trip to Midway/Beaverdell. Would be a blast meeting up with some more FIBCers! [cheers]

Sherbearqt, never seen any bats inside the mines, way too cold for them. Used to have them in the attic of our old house, they like it when it's over 100 degrees F! The mines are always in the mid teens (C), basically like over-air conditioning your house! A nice break from the 30C heat during the middle of the day! [31]

If you're refering to me, there are lots you can hike to, but we prefer to ride the quads to them! Otherwise this would be called "Clubtread". :D

Actually, the best mines I've found, that haven't been seen in decades, are the ones you have to hike to. I've found there are only a handful of people who actually like getting off the machines to explore!

Details? If you're heading to the Kootenays, I'll be happy to give you detailed directions, or tag along to show you the best ones. [cheers]

kootenaycat lookin forward to hearin from u i like sein old stuff like that. i dont get out to the koots much but if i do id like to get on some of your local; terain for some fishin and wheelin!!!!!!! any good mountain fly fishin lakes round there?

kootenaycat
07-15-2006, 03:29 PM
Haven't done any fly fishing at the lakes, but the creeks are fun! From the numbers of fish I saw jumping at the Porcupine lakes, I'd say if you had the right selection of flies it would be great! A belly boat would help too.
