What a gorgeous day to be outside! [cheers] We decided to ride up Porcupine Ck to Arkansas and Bayonne lakes, somewhere new to us, and still so close. With so many great riding areas near-by, we forget that there are so many more! Absolutely the most scenic country in this part of the Kootenays and definitely well worth exploring if you happen to be in this part of BC.
Cool little trappers cabin on the way to the lakes.
17956

Taking a breather from the dusty roads. Still better then the rain we've had the last few weeks!
17947

Sledders cabin. Pretty run down, but would keep you dry if was raining.
17954

The first lake we came across, thinking it was Arkansas lake. Lots of fish jumping, should have brought the fly rod!

17941

Being the first time in this area, we wound up backtracking and trying several roads before finding the right one. This one took us past some amazing slides. There was still a lot of snow remaining just below the road from this seasons avalanches.
17955

At the end of this road was the Three Sisters Peaks. Looks like an incredible place for sledding, a high markers paradise!

After finding the right road up to Arkansas and Bayonne lakes, we encountered the first snow that would give us (especially me!) a challenge!
17944

We were so close to Arkansas lake that I wasn't going to give up just yet. So out came the winch!
17953
17957

Finally got on top of the snow.
17942
17943

Wayne's Bombadier, um I mean CanAm 800 had no problems blasting through the deep stuff.
17936
17937

Except for here where it met its match, sorry Wayne! [f] After hearing "Visco-lock, visco-lock!", he eventually got it stuck!
17938

Arkansas Lake. Amazingly, there were no bugs. Mind you the snow has only been gone for a week or 2, so give it another couple of weeks and they will probably be out.

Still lots of snow just above the lake. We had originally planned to climb up to around 7000' to explore the Bayonne mine, but it will have to wait a couple of weeks.
17935

Checked out another alpine lake on the way back to the trucks. This one was beside Porcupine lake. Could see the bottom the whole way across, so probably dries up in August. Again, another awesome highmarking area.
17945
17946

Right beside the lake above was Porcupine lake. Will have to come up for the day with a belly boat and fly rod, the fish were jumping like crazy all over!

Nah, don't trade it in, just get a quad for those days you want to wheel the really narrow trails!

Most of the places we go around here can be accessed with a fullsize, just as long as you don't mind some custom pinstriping!

You got it! Headed up Porcupine Ck between Salmo and Ymir towards the Kootenay Lake, then turned south towards Salmo-Creston Highway. Definitely going to be doing some sledding up there next season.

Sparky, we are planning the same trip again Sunday July 9. Should be another all dayer, unload by 8:00, back at the trucks around 5:00. Where would you be coming from? Always look forward to meeting more FIBCers!

Not a single mosquito or black fly on this run, surprised the hell out of us! Wouldn't mind doing an overnighter up there, but it would take a whole lot of convincing to get me to sleep in a tent. Way too many Grizzlies at that elevation for me to sleep! And if you can talk John into coming down for a weekend, let me know! Started a new job couple months ago, so not going away for holidays this summer, but at least I have weekends off now! Going to Trout Lake again last weekend in August, same trip John came down for last year. Should be another awesome 3 days of riding!

Sparky, snow should just about be gone now up to the Bayonne mines, thinking about July 9 or 16. Let me know what your schedule is like. If you have to work the Monday, we should be able to get out Saturday instead so you don't have to drive back right after. Could do a BBQ here after too. [31]

Sparky, I will try to plan it for Sat July 15. Usually 3 of us ride together, 800bomb, 660 Grizz and my little Kodiak. Most of the ride is pretty boring logging roads, but the side trails into the lakes are fun, and the scenery more then makes up for the logging roads! Should be able to access the Bayonne mine by then as well, not sure if any of the adits are still open, but bring a good flashlight and rubber boots with ya! Would you be coming down alone, or bringing other buddies/family?

We see a road off the highway and see where it goes. :p

Most of the places we go are recommendations from others, or from tagging along with someone else. Also, I spend a lot of time looking at old maps and the minfile (online) and say to myself "I want to find that old mine or trail, etc"! Found some really interesting history that way.
