Hey guys been reading the forum for a while now and i just thought i would share my build.

Basically i was given two trucks by two seperate people..

the first was an 81 reg cab sb,

http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/81toy.jpg

Then i was given an 86 ext cab efi,

http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/86toy.jpg

The frame was totally destroyed on the 86, and the cabmounts on the 81 were totally gone so i decided to put the ext cab on to the 81 frame...

the 81 frame was pretty rusty but i figured since its a bush truck i could plate it all up

http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/frame1.jpg
http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/frame2.jpg
http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/frame3.jpg

once i got the frame all plated up i tore the engine and trans out of the 86..

http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/engine.jpg

then i put the engine and trans onto the 81 frame,

http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/engineframe.jpg

after i relocated the transmissin mount i removed and prepped the 86 cab for its new chassis,

http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/cab.jpg

i aligned the 81 frame underneath and dropped down the body, its not bolted up because i have to redo the rear cab mounts and slightly modify the front two.

http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/cab1.jpg

http://shady8.rmtmods.ca/toy/cab5.jpg

And thats where i'm at so far.. i think i'm doing alright because my only investment so far is welding gas. more to come if you guys wanna see the rest.

shifty5
06-24-2006, 12:54 AM
I'm from enderby, its in the okanagan between vernon and salmon arm.

and as for what i'm doing with it i'm putting in 54" chevy leafs in the back and a combo pack made out of stock toy rears for the front, i also have a marlin crawler adapter coming and using the spare tcase from the 81 i should have a decent setup for a bit. i'm building this almost entirely from spare parts by the way, i have a good collection of stuff saved up at the shop where i work.

thanks for the warm welcome

shifty5
06-24-2006, 03:28 PM
ya i'm sure we could find lots of stuff, the reason i ask is because with a 22re i think the truck is gonna be kinda useless in the mud. i was thinking of going somewhere for july long weekend. if i can get it done, i'm spending about 12 hours a day in the shop and kinda getting burnt out

shifty5
06-24-2006, 03:39 PM

hey slacker,

what are a set of front fenders worth for an 86? do you sell them out of your own shop or do you have dealers?

slacker
06-24-2006, 04:20 PM

you should if your looking for some flex and good travel casue its such a lite weight truck but that would be fine to

not much??? thats one of the best point of the build... it runs and goes...
congrats dude, thats a lot of work, p.s. you should be able to take another of those leaves out with no problem, and way better flex[cheers]

ri0
06-27-2006, 09:56 PM
for the leafs, depends what ur plans are for the back of the truck, flat deck, yes try taking one out...if yeah want descent flex from my experiance I found that they should have about an inch or so of positive arc to them to get decent flex and still be able to drive with out a lot of body roll

06-27-2006, 09:57 PM
Nice pics , keep em comin

G-rizzle Swank
06-27-2006, 10:52 PM
i would leave those springs for now. i get pretty good flex and i have the overload still in mine, i would try it like that and if you really want more flex then take another out, but then youll most likely have to do some sort of traction bar becaus eof the axle wrap. i had pretty goodf axle wrap with the overload when i had the 4.10 gears but now with 5.29's and 35's its fine

shockless
06-27-2006, 10:58 PM
wicked man, yea gregs flexes like mad... leave em

shifty5
06-28-2006, 11:32 AM
thanks for the input guys, i think i'll run the 3 leaves for now and take one out if its to stiff. i'll post some pics later of my sweet homemade lift kit from spare parts. hehe

slacker
06-28-2006, 05:35 PM
dont wait bud ... if ya want the fenders let me know ...

looks like about Sept ish now ...

shifty5
06-28-2006, 09:35 PM
I'd love to buy a set of those fenders but can't justify it right now, i could buy a front aussie locker for the same ammount as two fenders.

slacker
06-28-2006, 09:50 PM
yep ... no worries ... just lettin ya know .

08-10-2006, 11:03 AM
Well guys, plans have changed, there will be no more updates to this build thread, unfortunately i have to sell the truck and all my parts i'm moving to hawaii. i don't have enough posts to post this in the for sale, so if anyone is interested PM me.

kamloopsyota
08-10-2006, 12:55 PM
does that thing have power steering??? what all is left to be done and how much ya lookin for???

shifty5
08-10-2006, 04:14 PM
Well, i've got the rear chevy springs in now, just need to finish the combo pack for the front. needs a little more welding on the frame, and rear cab mounts cause i had to move them for the springs. it has power steering, also i'm throwin in all my parts for it and the other frame and cab that has a ifs steering box and good rear end. first 1500 takes it all. by the way the motor runs kickass, no smoke and its efi with a header.

Good luck on the Hawaii move!! I'd buy your truck if I didn't already have the same project sitting in my garage right now! :)

shifty5

kamloopsyota - what needs welding on the frame?? could you send me some pics of it to kam_bc@hotmail.com, thnaks man

the frame needs to be plated by the front shackles, i welded all the inner frame rails when the cab was off, and the rear body mounts need to be re-welded on. i'm sure there are a few more places but 90% is already done.

sj-x 500 - hey... was the old tranny an L43? if so, do you still have it??

i'm not to sure, all i know is that the running truck has an 86 5 speed, and the 81 had a 4 speed.

I also have the 81 block, trans and t-case, 8 rancho shocks 4 fronts and 4 rears, a nice roll bar with two lights on it, a tube front bumper, 2 rear drive shafts and 1 more front. first 1500 takes it all

kamloopsyota
08-11-2006, 12:34 PM
would you finish welding for some extra $$$$$, ive got no access to a welder haha

sj-x 500
08-11-2006, 06:32 PM
does it have a removable bell housing?

shifty5
08-12-2006, 10:01 AM
I don't really have time to work on the truck anymore otherwise i would just finish it, i'm also selling my full size pickup too.

sj-x 500
08-13-2006, 11:07 AM
shifty could you check if the tranny on the 81 had a removable housing? if it does i could really use it

Ditchpig
08-13-2006, 05:00 PM
If it was an '81 and it was a 4 speed then it was a L43. I have a L43 sitting in my driveway right now, just dropped it out of my '78 2WD. [1c]

sj-x 500
08-13-2006, 05:12 PM
if it was an 81, it "could" have been a L45 with a non removable bell. but if you are sure you have an L43, wanna sell'er? :D

shifty5
10-07-2006, 11:06 PM
well i decided to finish this truck after all, heres where i'm at..

if you didn't read the whole post, its an 86 ext cab on an 81 reg cab s.b frame.

does anyone know where i can get a passenger side door and a driver side fender?
