Mt. Benson is a nice high viewpoint often hiked near Nanaimo, great 360 views from the top, but this 'knoll' that sticks out the side is not often (or ever?) hiked -- no real trail.. but with the aid of some maps and a GPS - we blazed a little hike up to check it out, and this is the result:

and a legend for convenience's sake:

Some great hikes around here... and literally in my backyard! Anyone coming over to the island and want to do a hike - I'd be glad to show you around!

Actually, yeah... thats in the works ;) -- there has been recent logging up there.. and a perfect logging road that would take almost 1 1/2 hrs off the hike --- so don't you worry, I'm scouting that option reaaal soon! (looks like a few good obstacles too!)

Here's a map of the westwood ridges hike (not the mt. benson one, but the one that goes to roberts roost, among other little peaks/ridges)

We did a night hike up here... twas a good night! Mmmm.. hot buttered rum at the top. stumble down...

far right= Morell Parking (yellow 'P' sign)
fork= more of a 'Y' actually - left shows the trail to Roberts Roost, right, back up the ridges
Daffodils 1(faces Nanaimo)&2(faces Benson) People planted daffodils up on these hills, quite beautiful... Marked on the map, as well as the Scout Cabin (cool old broken down cabin)

Some elevations:
end of Arbot Rd. 582feet
Scout Cabin - 962feet
Daffodils-1 1152feet
Daffodils-2 1155feet
Fork - 1090 feet
'039' on the map, Roberts Roost - 1259feet
Morell Parking - 539feet

actually, in the other thread I posted about Ammonite Falls.. holy shit are there some CRAZY mountain bike trails.. and TONS of them -- I did see some up Mt. Benson too.. but the ones by ammonite are elaborate and well maintained.. huge drops, log rides over crazy ravines... looks awesome

Up Westwood ridges too, and up near 'Extension' Ridge and 'The Abyss' --- this is most definately Downhill riders country.. makes me want a bike so bad.
