View Full Version : Trans am 350 fit in my Jimmy??

I have a 1983 Trans Am in Vancouver to look at next week. The guy that owns it says there is a 350 4 barrel in it that runs great. I am told by others this 350 may be fifferent which will not fit in my 1981 f\s gmc jimmy. I'm certain someone here knows the differences if any. Does anyone have pictures of a trans am (pontiac) 350 sbc compared to a chevy\gmc 350 sbc I can look at to understand differences. I was told a pontiac 350 will not bolt up to my gmc turbo 350.

83 Trans Am (3rd generation F body GMs) use the small block Chevy's in them not the Pontiac V8's so the 350 in the 83 Trans Am will go in to your pickup.

So... I've been told there is obvious differences between a pontiac and chev sbc. If the pontiac sbc is a chevy engine it should look just like my 305 or 400 that came out of my gmc truck and jimmy? And all 83 ta's are 3rd generation F body GMs?

1982 to 1992 Camaros and Firebirds(Trans Ams) are 3rd gen F bodys (the IROC body style) and they both use the small block chevy engines (305s and 350s) the 1967 to 1981 Firebirds use the Pontiac V8 and there is a deffinate difference between the Chevs and the Pontiacs

And it was pretty horrid. Which is a shame, the 301 shared the same bore and stroke as the famous Chev "zapper" 302, if they hadn't weakened every part of the 301 to the point it may as well be made of balsa wood it could have been a wicked motor. And ray, you're a fucking retard, that's all I have to say about that.

Oh, and yes, 3rd gens all have small block Chevs in them. It'll drop in no prob, but make sure it's actually a 350, you couldn't get a 350 in a F-bod from the factory yet in 1983. It'll have to have been swapped later on. For safety sake, get the numbers off the motor and match them up on www.mortec.com

Well I'll check it over and get the numbers from under the alternator, on the block. How does a person get the numbers from behind the block on the drivers side without pulling the engine?? If it looks like a chevy sbc I'll do a compression test too. Thanks for all the info. The guy wants $150 for thw whole car. Its from Alberta, no papers, but he says Alberta can get me papers and he will sign it over to me. The car body needs a lot of work but all I'm interested in is the engine.
