View Full Version : Pitman Arm Woes

Hey guys!

I'm not an experienced mechanic, so bear with me if I sound newb ;)

My Pitman arm on my '76 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 is all worn out. :( I picked up a steering box and pitman arm from a 1980 GMC and pick your part, and found out when I went to swap them that the pitman arm is different between the '76 and 80. When I pulled my old steering box I found out the box is still good, but the splines where the box connects to the pitman arm are all stripped out. The 80's Box fits fine except for the power steering connectors. I'm having a hard time finding a replacment pitman arm from the '76 era, and I'm thinking of just using my box and pitman arm from the 80's truck, and replace stuff along the steering line until I can find something that matches up between '76 and 80. Anyway, just wondering... what what YOU do if this was you.

P.S. If anyone has or knows where a '76 pitman arm are, I will shower them with money and gifts for it. ;)

is this in a 4wd or 2wd?

I checked with Lordco and Napa... they don't carry my Pitman arm... the guys says because it's not a part that would wear out or need to be aftermarket. They said they could hook me up with a drop pitman arm, but I don't need one...

It's a 4x4.

Thanks for the replies!

Go to a wrecker tell them to get on the computer and find you one. [cheers]

I have been doing that... but nobody here in Salmon Arm has anything 66-76 vintage... Pick your part in kelowna didn't ether. Only 77 or newer.

I'm thinking more and more of just trying to redo the draglink (I think that's what it's called) and power steering hoses with my 80's vintage steering box and pitman arm... I'm pretty sure it could be done... hehe.

Ideally finding a 76 or older pitman arm would be ideal... but looking at how it's put together the newer 77-80's pitman splines and such seem a lot stronger. ie more of them

Any decent wrecker can find you one, they just ain't trying as it's not a big buck thing....

I can? That would be perfect. How difficult is it? If it's not too involved give me a quick rundown... I'd appreciate it a bunch!
