was out on the deck this evening and noticed two painted turtles trying to lay eggs in the sand on the beach just in front of my steps, and in my neighbours yard...

my other neighbour was telling me that they haven't been around in a couple of years, so this was a pretty special sight. i wonder what the gestation period is? would like to see the babies, if there are any. :)

Ya my buddy has 3 of those turtles, all at different stages of life. apparanlty when people have pet turtles and don't want them any more they just dump them in mill lake or other places. maybe it's someone ex pet.

not really sure about the nativity of turtles around here, but the First Nations people named the piece of land I'm sitting on "Turtle Lodges", so my guess would be that they're originals...

I remember penny turtles as a kid, too.. but that was in Alberta. The ones from yesterday were about the size of dinner plates - neighbour figures they were pretty big ones. I'll keep an eye out for the babies and see what I can come up with... in the meantime, I think I'm going to exchange my new camera for one with better macro... ;) James I have camera envy. :D

Very sweet! When Reece and I went to Playa Del Carmen last year at this time :( , we went down to the beach one day and found a bunch of little areas or the beach ropped off... in little circles. We knew right away what it was but asked the staff. We were right... turtles came up during the night and lated eggs in the sand... very cool!
