its either a 1973 or 1978 i think block, or which ever the casting number is located on. the ae part just identify's the block version for that year.

check around on google and see what ya get.

From what I recall from my Ford days, "D" is the decade - 70's (c-60's, e-80's) and the 8 is the year. So that should be a 1978 block. Other then that, can't help you any more!

Are you sure that the number isnt d3ae

this is what i got so far

400.... 1973 .....4.00bore....10.297 deck....same bellhousing as 351c.typically mated to FMX transmission. RARE here is the link http://raceabilene.com/kelly/hotrod/engine2.html

A little further digging came up with this

D would be the decade so 1970`s
8 or 3 would be the year of the decade so thats either an 8 or 3 and so on

yeah, D is for 70's. So could be 73 or 78 depending.

If its a 73, it could be the oddball 400 with the smallblock bolt pattern.
