By the end of the summer I plan on having a new engine in the samurai, the 1.3L aint cuttin it... im think the 16valve 1.8 or a vw TD... anyone else have any thaughts? and how tough this would be to do? also... a semi-total cost of a swap thay they have done or know someone who did one.. just gotta figure what i need to pull together here

that 1.6 EFI is a good swap. you probably want more power im guessing. Talk to norm about the 1.6 swap.

4.3L V6, and the thing would be like a race car. I have seen a couple suzukis on the net with a 4.3.

1.6 is a good swap. Either the 8 valve or the 16 is good, just depends on what you can find and how much you wanna spend. Wreckers know what these engines are worth with wiring so expect to shell out some cash (unless you can find a whole truck for a good deal). My 1.6, 8 valve was $800 and I bought the adaptor kit from Rocky Road for ~$200 (landed here with shipping, etc). Also, if you plan on speding the money to do this, save a little extra and get it wired for injection. You'll thanks yourself in the long run [cheers]

I just did a 1.6 16v conversion and theres more than enough power now. only thing i would have done different is use a EFI tank the external pump is loud. cost was just over 1000, had the wiring done by trail tough

k, thanks for the info, was lookin for a semi total cost and got what i asked for, now the trick is to get the money and track down a motor for a non stupid price... anyone know of any?

Well you know Im going to say go diesel but not if you want to keep the sami tranny as it will grenade slowly. So yeah go with a 8v or 16v. But for the love of god plan on getting Brent at Trail Tough to do a wiring kit for you. I have seen the finished product and it is saweet! SJX 500 has on of Brents kits and its pimped.

yea i have trailtoughs kit.

the motor mounts would work nicely on a samurai, i have a 410, so i made my own. the fact that there is a spacer plate makes the clutch feel funny.. i'd weld ears on it.

the wiriing harness is slick. no two ways about it for a 16v.

weld ears on the clutch?? and by makes it feel funny... what do ya meen? ive felt some effed clutches haha

on the bellhousing of the tranny you weld some ears on, to match the 1.3 tranny to the 1.6 big block bolt pattern. with a spacer plate the release bearing tends to slide out too far and feels like it gets cocked when it's fully released and takes a second to snap over the nub.

also, if you do go 16v. GET A CENTERFORCE. or a 4.16 t-case. otherwise the engine has more then enough power to outpower the stock clutch. even if brand new.

use a 2wheel drive motor and tranny and shorten your intrmidiete drive shaft, gets rid of that 1.3 shit tranny. still use the same tranny mount and the 1.6 rad fits nicely .your intrmediete shaft goes from 16" to 9" in lenth and the tranny mount on the 1.6 turn it 90degrees and it fits the 1.3 bracket, either put a 2" body lift in or drop your engine mounts 2" and re-locate mounts.so your hood can close ,then you have to cut your tanny tunnel a little bit to fit the bigger 1.6 tranny. works sweet, did every thing in my drive way ,took about 2 weeks working on it after work. got the harness done for 250 cash. and mounted the gas tank from 1.6 and high pressure line . get a donner car makes things easer and cheaper.

dlo's cost was less than mine for a 16v, but he found a whole truck for cheap. My motor came from a wrecker. it was waranteed and tested, but you pay for that.

another vote for trail tough and brent's wiring.

Yeah a 2wd trackick tranny would be pimped. Or just bob the lowwer leg on the 4wd tranny and then you got a doubler. Going to do that in Sawzall.

I've never done the 1.6 to the 1.3, but I know lots of guys have done the 1.3 "twin cam" head on the 1.6 block, so they must all work together. Don't know what advantages it might have though [wako]

1.6 on a 1.3 [wako]

Wouldn't you loose some compression if you did that

i have no idea... thats why i was asking...

many do 1.3 injected head on 1.6 block to make for an easy swap. may as well figure out the wiring and do it all if you ask me though. :)

thing is i dont have a 1.6 block.... hah... how much does one cost :)

04-04-2006, 11:46 PM
you actually gain lots. bigger valves.

joshjohnbaun
04-04-2006, 11:52 PM
would it lower the compression, also... while in here instead of creating a new thread... a new fuel pump, according to trail tough is 40$ should that be the same at napa or lordco? or what should i expect to pay..

sj-x 500
04-05-2006, 12:06 AM
if you put any 1.3 head on a 1.6 block you gain compression, smaller combustion area. i seem to remember one guy sayin that the 1.3 had bigger valves then the 1.6 8v. but if you get a 16v 1.6 block, you can only upgrade it to a twin cam 1.3 head. the pistons are cut out for 2 valves per head, so shy of getting new pistons... it don't work.

joshjohnbaun

ah you got it backwards of what i was saying, i was thinking of 1.6 head put onto 1.3 engine... but nvm.... i realized...

Ok so... i changed all the vacuum hoses on the carb to nice new ones.. cuz the old ones were super bunged up... and nowwwww.... when i go to start it up thismorning.. it starts fine.. but as soon as i let my foot off the gas to let it idle/warm up... it stalls... does that all the time now... but if i let it warm up for a bit (consists of me sitting in it and holding my foot on the gas) for bout 5-10 mins... it finally doesnt stall... barely... and i drive it... runs like harsh shit.... anyone know what this is... hopefully this pony carb fixes it.. if not.. anyone have any other suggestions?
