K well... this is odd... sometimes when i turn the key it fires no problem... but every now and then... usually when im out at school or wherever it decides it wont fire, it turns over and everything.. just wont fire... i have new sparkplugs, cap, rotor, its a relatively new starter in there... any solutions? or any ideas?

Try checking some fuel issues. Filter, Charcoal canister, etc...

Just a thought, but if it's an 88 1/2 with a feedback carb, there's tons of problems with those if they're not tuned properly [cheers]

don't hit the gas pedal unless you're already running, the sammi carb is bad for flooding i found.

yea found that one out before haha, my guess is fuel filter and charcoal canister, we cleaned the battery terminals and havent had any problems yet really.

Ok so... I replaced fuel filter, cleaned terminals, new gas, oil change and engine flush.. its still turning but not firing... if i pump the gas really fast it starts.. then runs no problem.... any ideas???

it sounds like u have a fuel issue........cause it did that at the run on sunday and i heard it turning over just fine but no go and if u have to pump the gas real quik to make it run its a fuel issue maybe its draining back into tank......not sure on those type units....[cheers]

shit in the carb.

if you pump it to start it that means that you are squirting in extra fuel via the aaccelerator pump. that means that you may be running lean in teh floats, or idle mixture screws. it also could be that you are running rich and flooding it out, and it needs full throttle to get the air needed.

but since it is the start up when warm that is messin up.. the choke may be blocking air flow till it has sufficient vaccum to open up the choke break.

it could be anything to do with the carb

Taz, with the choke... did you route it in to the cab? or do you have to open the hood every time?

Uhhh... ok.. so we have done this so far... new plugs/wires, cap/rotor (sealed the cap with silicone today) adjusted timing, cleaned out carb as best we could, new fuel filter... and its still doing the same shit.. im assuming it isnt the carb as we cleaned it pretty good... any other ideas?

joshjohnbaun

this is the pattern ive noticed... it fires completly fine in the mornings, no hesitation nothing... It sometimes works all day without any hesitation, sometimes i have to pump it a bit to get er rolling... but once its hot and i let it sit for say... an hour or two... and try to start it... it wont go... unless i pump like a madman, and sometimes even that doesnt work... this is reaaaaaaaaaaly annoying hahaa

you likely have to readjust the settings on the carb. no matter how clean it is, it needs to be set up properly.
