Wow, what a drive, what a hike, what a day.

my jetta was bottoming out on the sharp rocky road about halfway, and we almost turned back, but it seemed to get better, then worse again, snow, hail, almost turned back... this seemed to happen a lot along the way. but I am SO glad we persevered, it was beautiful out there. effing beautiful.

ARGH - I NEED MY JEEP UP HERE!

The drive was 65 km from the main highway, not bad, right? Well, how about 65km on gravel... and you're just at 'Holburg' now, a tiny little logging camp in the middle of nowhere, only 35 more km to the trailhead that can take you all the way to Cape scott (pretty much the most rugged tip you can find on vancouver island, Trip in the works). .. today we hiked to San Josef Bay (about an hour hike one way from the trailhead)... and did some exploring along the beach and in some amazing sea caves!

Nothing like a warm welcome on this old loggin' road. funny guys.

a 'shoe' tree along the way, made for some cool pictures!

these CAVES were amazing! ! you could walk a good 100 feet into one of them!

having Maryah in this cave gives you an idea of how big they were...

I'd totally recommend this trip - and if you're really adventurous ( I know most of us here are ) you can start here and head right out to Cape Scott - its about a 5hr hike I've been told, and I haven't had the opportunity to do it yet. .. but if you did, you'd be on the very north-western tip of the island, its supposed to be wild out there.

Are any of these places accessible by 4x4? I'm thinking this would make an awesome summer trip.

Keep posting the pics & story. I'm jealous

the road out to this place has TONS of open logging road... I did this 65km on gravel in my jetta, but a truck would be needed for anything other than the main road (kinda like Harrison).. you can do it in a car, but a truck is where it's at.

I'd love to go up there and explore that area. You gonna be up that way all summer too?

I guess it would be a full day (from the mainland) just to get to the start of the trail since its on the north end of Van Isl, eh?

I'll be here for a couple more months... then heading down to nanaimo - Port McNeill where I live is about 3 hrs from nanaimo. turn off for this trail is about 20 minutes past Port McNeill.

I'd come back up in the summer to do the hike to cape scott, 5 hrs one way, camp at the tip of the island, then head'er back the next day.

Iave done the capescott trial. very cool. but take some time off an do it right an check all the other trails also. very busy now in summer , u may need reservations....when I did it( in the 70's) I saw a total of 5 peaple in 9 days.

You can find stuff from japan at the beach by the lighthouse.also is a cool place to camp.

And nice pics BTW! Sounds like a great (hiking) trip to take! You've got an eye for photography like Lizard!

this time of year - there is NOBODY out there. not one soul on the whole trip.

and yeah, we found some japanese garbage down on the beach. . 'happy-super-tasty' choco-milk container and whatnot.
