I have a mint 429 that came from a car with auto I want to put into a 79 Bronco (also auto w/ 4:1 np205) that will be used about 50-50 mud and trails as well it will have to be street legal to get to the camping/ bogging, whos got what opinions of whether to go standard or auto??? what are the best setups (gears/trans/ motor mounts/exhaust) you can think of for this application.?

Dont get me wrong I do love to drive a standard, I just want to hear the pros and cons from people who use and break both so I can contemplate which way to got when I build it up.

its going to be tough w/standard u have to worry about getting mud in the cluth and smoking it or breaking the linkage but when it breaks cluths are fairly cheap auto u need a good tranny for all the bogging u want to do something that will take good revs but when it blows up u need to rebuild the whole thing plus hard parts standard is cheaper maintance that is my choose>>>>>>>>>>>> [51] [31]

standard.

pros:

engine brakeing
you select the gear
can still be started if starter is fucked
cheaper usually

cons:

no power applied when shifting
3 pedals 2 legs. takes some skill
clutch problems

auto

pro:

control over acceleration
power all the time
one hand free to drink beer

cons:

usually not strong in stock form for hi power
if something goes, your fucked
if starter goes, your screwed
one more cooler to worry about (trans cooler)

[iagree] Also the problem with the 429 there are no applications that i know of that came with a standard very hard to adapt plus auto (BEER TRANSMISSION) and a C6 is the strongest of the auto's for off road so good to go plus if you destroy one there are billions around[36]

I was told the same about not having a standard behind the 429s so you have to find oddball parts to try a standard swap(have no idea what the parts are though not a ford guy)

Auto for shure, you have ultimit control. autos out last any clutch. you spin or smoke the clutch if you try to ease into somthing with a standard. With an auto if you need the next gear, just shift. And unless your supper talented when your stuck you can d-r in an auto and get out sometimes, in a stard the momentum is lost when shifting. Standards are for having fun on the streets, autos for real 4X4's.You can't shift, brake, steer, and sipp your pop with a standard,,,,,,,,you can with an automatic.

I like my standard on the street alot, but sometimes of the pavement there have been times when i wish i had auto, esspecialy when im on the phone, and theirs some real stinky smoke comin form my clutch...........but that was mainly because i wasnt payin attention, or thats my end of the story

auto if its a real problem adapting a 5 speed zf or 4 speed t-18 or sm465 tho im shure there is a scattershield application to adapt......
Autos are for chevs and girls...................and mud only applications.....
i dunno maybe im ambidextrous or can handle multitasking (beer and wheelin) but i prefer standard with bull low any day........

Ok, So it looks like I'm favouring the auto for how the truck will be used. I drive it hard when mudding ect, and at least the I could get another auto almost anywhere if ( when) I grenaded it..now the question is how much of a P.I.T.A is it to use the car trans that came with the motor and swap the rear output ???
ps....I already have a beater trans to steal the parts from.

I can. Definitly ain't as easy, but when you get used to your truck & clutch its not a problem

I think all you fockers who say you can't drive stick and drink just don't know how to drive standard properly

you got heel & toe to work all 3 pedals, knees to steer, drink with one hand, shift with the other. or don't drink for 2 secs while you shift and hold you drink & sjift with the same hand so you can still keep one on the wheel. It isn't rocket science, just take a little skill & coordination.

and with low enough gears you don't need gas till you got the clutch out anyway so it makes it that much easier.

that said for a mud bogger I would still want an auto since it still has power between shifts. But for anything else standard is the only way to go.
