454, new rochester, how does the electric choke work? Is there a wire that should be activated when the key is turned on or a switch somewhere?..thanks..[cheers]

12 volts keyed power to the choke

Are you talking about a factory electric choke, or putting one on?

The factory one on my '86 uses another oil pressure sender to ground the choke relay so if the key is on but engine off, the choke isn't getting power. If you're putting an elec choke on, just pull power off the HEI wire, but fuse it. Also might be a good idea to use that power to turn on a relay, and then supply power direct from battery, can't remember what the amp draw is on a choke element.

It had a carb with an electric choke,(factory) there is a wire there that I THINK was for it but there is no power to it, I tried to trace it back but can't find a switch or anything....so I guess I need to run a keyed power line but does it take 12 volts or do I need some kind of switch?...thanks.

It might only show power during crank cycle

'88 Chevy's aren't EFI? News to me!

Have you tried testing for power with the engine running? Like I said earlier, there is NO power at the choke on a factory electric choke unless the relay sees a ground at the oil pressure sending unit! Give that a try, or just do like already mentioned, wire an inline fuse into the wiper circuit that has power with key on.
