We had to go for a ride up the railbed to check out the new signage and blockades on the trestles. Had a blast in the snow, took the detour trail over the Bulldog tunnel, then continued on across the railbed to follow the original road that came in from highway 3 and up to Bulldog lookout before dropping to the Lower Arrow lake.

Went down to the beach to <s>play</s> pose while waiting for Speedy to show up.[f]

The railbed used to run along a lower line )before the Hugh Keenleyside dam was built in 1969) which was what this tunnel was for. Kind of cool when the water is at the right level, you can drive a boat right through it!

Got into almost 2' of snow at 4000'. The belts were getting toasty at this point, so we called it quits!

We were so close to breaking through the fog here, could see patches of blue sky through it, but couldn't make it any further up the road!

You'd make a great tour/trail guide -- you've always got some interesting bits of history for the area you go

We used to camp and play on the beach on the other side just above the dam (Driftwood bay) until they put the generating station in. Wrecked all our fun!

When/what were you doing in Castlegar?

Jeepnut, the mountain bikers must have realized their mistake and fixed the signs!;)

WAH!!! [j] I wanna go home! I grew up in Trail and used to go 4x4ing all over that area. Me and a friend used to ride our motorcycles on the C&W when CP Rail trains were still running. (I worked for CP at the time so I made sure no trains were scheduled. Still kinda freaky going through the tunnels.LOL!)

Thanks for the memories.

Lizard, I've never tried chains out on the trail, just in the driveway plowing snow. My boss uses and swears by them, but I would think you would just dig down further faster. The quads that I've seen go the best in snow have stock tires as the mud tires seem to dig down unless you have lots of wheel speed. Kind of like a sled, 2" paddle track does great if you have lots of track speed!
