Went out west of Williams Lake on Sunday - me in my Cherokee, docsavage in his Range Rover.

First stop - Raven Lake - saw some hunters camped out but didn't stop in to chat.

Took a side road that they 'tried' to block with a gravel pile. Looks like either they are going to put in a culvert, or they already took it out. We just had fun...

Ever heard the saying 'a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work'? I think the owners of this boat trailer wish they had gone to work that day. The alum boat was just off the road a bit. looks like the trailer spring broke and the axle bent back. Funny thing is there was also a big chunk of leaf spring that would have come off a big truck of some sort. i wonder if either the truck or trailer hit the big piece of spring and it bounced up and broke the trailer spring...

...this made me think of the Blair Witch Project. kinda creepy as in one section near a lake there are these piles of rocks all over the place. But we figured it was some bored treeplanters that did it at some time.....I hope....

nice but I would rather be hunting up there

I had to get a GPS because everyone was telling me to get lost.

we were heading home down the FSR at about 8:30PM or so. This moose trots out in front of us and starts heading down the road in front of me for a few hundred yards. This was fairly close to where the hunters were camped out...

Aside from the moose, the only other wildlife we saw was 2 grouse.

We had FRS radios - docsavage was ahead of me around a corner and I hear 'tractor' over the radio. I'm thinking WTF? tractor? traction? HUH? and as I come around the corner there's this huge newer blue Ford/New Holland tractor coming towards us. It stops and out gets an older native fellow and another guy with a rifle. Apparently the native is guiding the hunter - cruising through the bush in a tractor. We were ok cause 'as long as you aren't hunting in my territory, etc, etc...'

they had the gun - I wasn't gonna take a pic of nothin....

Which reminds me also - way out in the sticks, through creeks and mud, weaving through trees, scraping bushes....we come to signs saying private property by a log fence.. W...T....F...?
We continue around the fence but it goes into the property and there's 2 cabins and an overseas shipping container (you know, the big ones they stack on the ships). a couple guys approach, then 5 or 6 more crawl out of the woodwork. OMG! we are dead! stumbled upon some drug or smuggling operation.
Turns out they were pretty decent guys, even helped us out with some more detailed maps and some trail info. i guess the container was for storing their gear when not there. They actually managed to buy the land from someone who got title to it long time ago. and..uh..no, I did not take pics...just in case....

Great pics, love the Caribou. where you near Dog Creek by any chance??

The pic of the cabin w/ the mud/grass roof, that's what my grandfather used to live in. (yep, we would go visit him when I was little)

Got lots of family History up there..[5]

awesomes pics, great story

can you still buy land like that? I mean out in the middle of nowhere?

I am a dirty, dirty girl

10-12-2005, 01:36 PM
Yeah, not even close to having snow there. Damn cold at the top of the mountain with the wind, though.

Will definitely let you know again next time out. We made it to the pelican preserve at Stum Lake.(for those that don't know, it is an actual pelican breeding ground. the whole lake is off limits and planes aren't even allowed to fly over it. lots of pelicans in the summer)
anyway, we made it to the lake and partway around before the trail just disappeared. Not having a chainsaw with us [16], we had no choice but to turn around. According to the map we were probably about 1-2 kms from the next trail but no way to get there.
Next time, oh yes.....next time.....

Nice pics and write-up! I would have been shitting myself when the "5 or 6 more guys crawled out of the woodwork"! Definitely would have looked like a grow-op! The shipping container is a cool idea for storing quads, etc!

Nice looking XJ too, what lift does it have, and what size are those tires?

Lots of land around here, 10 acre parcels and larger, smaller, ranches, land with lakes but most of it is out aways from the towns. I think you can even still homestead in BC, not sure tho.

had to edit out the dirty dirty girl part...heh heh [15]

10-13-2005, 06:08 AM
about buying the land, it seems that if someone got the deed to the land long time ago, it can be sold (which makes sense) and I guess someone did homestead or buy it from the gov't years ago. For all I know they were full of crap and just stuck up some signs and built cabins....

kootenaycat, my lift is homebrew - bronco coils, dakota leafs, YJ shocks in front, F150 shocks in back. Both swaybars gone - handles differently but I'm getting used to it (and I drive slower) For the rear springs, I left the cherokee main leaf on, cut the eyes off the dakota main and put the whole dakota spring pack on (minus the overload spring) I'm pretty happy with it but will probably try to lift some more this winter and add adjustable track bar and control arms. Also I do need better quality shocks.

the tires are Aurora 235/75 15 MT's - I bought them practically new off a wreck with the wheels for $300

Zone, we were quite a bit north of Dog Creek area but I was in that area quite a while ago - lots of trails all over the place.
