View Full Version : Thanksgiving in the Kootenays NEW PICS Oct16

Got out for a nice day of riding in the sun on Monday near Salmo to explore a couple trails we've been meaning to check out. Found another new mine that no one has been to (by motorized vehicle) in over 50 years! Had to cut down a couple of trees in the middle of the mining road that were about 8-10" diameter, and others on the road were up to about 16", and at that elevation they grow pretty slow! Cold start in the morning (7:30am), but quickly warmed up enough to shed a few layers and take the sledding gloves off!

The old mining road we opened up. It was in pretty good shape considering it was last used in 1929, the chainsaw got lots of use though. Had to watch the outside tires in a couple spots as they were almost hanging over the bank, and it was a loooonnnnnngggggg ways down![2b]

Entrance to the old mine we discovered. About 20' from this entrance is a vertical shaft that we had fun tossing rocks down! Figured it was about 100' deep! Watch your step![xx(]

I forgot my flashlight [27], and Wayne's flashlight didn't want to work even though he had charged it up the night before. He was a little pissed off so he fixed it real gooder by tossing it down the 100' shaft![15]

Next we made it to the base of Reno mountain the the Reno mine where 160,000 ounces of gold came out of the hill![:0]

Saw this tailings pile at the end of a rockslide just above the Reno, so we went for a hike.

The entrance was sluffed, but saw this cool view of Hidden Ck valley to the north. We walked to the end overlooking the valley, and saw some huge ass grizzly tracks in the snow![2b] About an hour later we were talking to some other guys on quads who watched the grizzly just below the ridge we were riding/hiking![1b] It's time to buy myself a defender and some slugs!

John, you gotta plan a week trip down here next summer to explore some of our riding, let me know well in advance and I'll book off the same week. And no, the old mine road wasn't on MapSend or my Softmap software. I did find it on an old map my Dad handed down years ago, even has the plot numbers of the claims!

Flash light? .......... thanks Tips![33][9]

Punk in Drublic, you must be a logger to be moving to Salmo, or planning a big grow op![15] Kiddin! Salmo is nice, used to have a bad reputation from all the good 'ol redneck loggers![36] It has mellowed out now, and has tons of awesome riding/hunting areas close by. I'm about 20minutes away, so I do lots of riding out there and still haven't covered all the old mines and mining roads there! Let me know when/if you move out, I'll show you some sweet trails!

Any lines on work yet? You thinking of pulp mill, Cominco, Hospital, etc?

Yup, don't have to worry as much about the crack-heads here, and NO aircare!!!![36]

Cool as usual koot... So when u clear a trail do u just cut the trees wide enuff for a quad?:D I do it when hunting an cut them just wide enuff for the toy, [9] then look for the lazy hunters in the fullsize trucks with dented 1/4 panels[9]

You should plan a week Quad trip up there an Jeepnut &I could plan a week trip down here. I just found another trail up to alpine this last hunting trip

Lizard, I cut the trees just wide enough for my Kodiak to squeeze through, it's funny watching the 750 Kawi's fenders buckle, but he always manages to follow me!:D

I was telling Jeepnut that we are going to plan at minimum a long weekend down there next summer, if the Caroline mines are still open, I wouldn't mind checking them out plus whatever else you guys got planned!

Speedy and Wayne had to go home early today, well Wayne had an excuse (grand daughters B-day), but Speedy was afraid of getting a little wet![f] But I stayed out all day today, got soaked and had an awesome day of exploring a few more nice trails, one that also led to alpine (6400') and found the top of the tram line for a couple of the old mines up Sheep ck. If (I mean when!) you guys come down, we should camp on the creek up there, and we'll spend 2 days riding that area. We might cover it all!

Oh yeah, remembered to bring the flashlight today!

Old dynamite box, didn't want to lift the lid to see what's inside![xx(]

The spiders are back!!!!!!!!!!! We saw them in a few mines today, guess they hibernate in there. Definitely are Daddy Long Legs, counted 8 legs on most of them! It was cool waking them up by holding the flashlight (700,000 candlepower Princess Auto) about 6" away and watching the cluster just start to vibrate![aahh]

Top of the Reno workings. Got reminded how dangerous old mines can be inside this one. About 80' in it was stoped out (high ceilings) and the floor was covered with rotten timbers that had fallen out of the ceilings. Wayne started to walk across the shit when he noticed an opening in the rot, when we threw a rock down the opening, it fell a loooooonnnnnnnnggggggggg time![aahh] Good wake up for us!
